Ruby Lake loves her work as a tour guide in her historic hometown of Philadelphia, especially since, once a year, Worldwide Tours lives up to its name and sends her on a vacation to one of its partner cities. This year, she chose Venice, Italy. Sunshine and wine await… until murder casts a shadow. When Ruby accidentally films a murder, the Venice police say she needs to lay low until Interpol can tie up loose ends.

Marco D’Amico can’t believe it when a frightened American tourist is placed at his sleepy little station. Sure, it’s a shame that the lady witnessed a murder, but why put his peaceful town at risk? As soon as Ruby sets foot in his station, trouble follows. Marco’s not sure if he never wants to lay eyes on her again… or make sure she has eyes only for him.

Ruby Lake is a tour guide in Philadelphia now on her way to Italy. She loves adding stamps to her passport and this is the first one from Venice, Italy. When she arrives, she is greeted by a tour guide from Worldwide Tours, the company she works for. She has no intention of joining the tour group and prefers exploring on her own but first she asks the guide to recommend a good restaurant.

The restaurant is everything the guide said it would be and they went above and beyond to make her comfortable by putting a chair on the beach for her to sit and take in the view. While sitting there she overhears a conversation by a group of men which she believes is a rehearsal for the film festival. She video tapes the actors until one of the men is stabbed to death. It was not a rehearsal for the film festival but a rehearsal for terrorism.

When she is spotted, she puts on an act of her own where she comes off as a tourist and is ignorant of what is happening around her, but it doesn’t work for long. She runs for her life and while running loses her ID badge with her name, photo and address back home, she is in trouble. She immediately goes to the police station and turns over her video a video of men from a terrorist group called the Bloody Palm.

Ruby is in danger and is now a witness to a murder so putting her up in a safe place with police protection falls on the town of Rovigo and officer Marco D’Amico. Marco is not happy about a witness staying in his town or the fact that he must babysit for a little old tour guide. Obviously, Marco didn’t consider that tour guides are all ages so seeing Ruby throws him for a loop. While he must figure out a way to introduce her to neighbors and relatives without endangering her or the town Ruby wants to enjoy her vacation and so far, she isn’t.

Ruby is welcomed by everyone because everyone believes that Marco has a girlfriend and will get married, so she gets hugs all around while they tell Marco to not mess up. Ruby has recently dumped her fiancé Liam after catching him cheating so she wants excitement and Marco is looking very good.

She must hide out for at least a week until someone from Interpol comes to take over, so Ruby is not having the vacation of her dreams and is now an Interpol witness. Although the police have the video, she took showing the men it is more than likely they will be looking for revenge. As Ruby and Marco begin to enjoy each other’s company and try to figure out if love at first sight is real or a myth trouble comes knocking on the door.

This was such a sweet story about two people thrown together because of a murder and who may find more than they expected. Ruby and Marco are wonderful characters and I loved them. A small town where Marco is happy to stay and has no desire for promotion or move to a bigger place. Can Ruby go from living in a big city to living in a small town where everyone knows everyone and keeping secrets is very difficult.

If you are not familiar with Ms. Principal’s books, then start with this sweet romance and I am sure you will be running for more.
