Since the day of her birth Angela Edmonds has known nothing but horror. Her father, a self-proclaimed prophet and leader of a cult, constantly beat her and degraded her in front of his congregation. Her mother, who was raised Amish, did nothing to stop her husband from abusing their child even going as far as urging him on by yelling out “beat the little whore”. This was the life she knew, but even though it should have weakened her spirit , she overcame, went to college and became a defense attorney.
Of course, she would never forget what she suffered and turned to alcohol and drugs to help her overcome her childhood. After a one night stand left her pregnant, she gave up drinking and drugging to concentrate on her child. But, her parents were not done tormenting her, and when her son Jake was born, they took him and disappeared. According to her father, he was the Chosen One and they left Angie alone and near death. When her father was caught and sent to a maximum prison, she left Jake with his father Dan for safety reasons, but when her father escaped, once again her son was taken from her, only this time he disappeared into Mexico. With drug wars taking precedence in Mexico, she would get no help from the officials there.
Now with the help of Dan’s wife Sarah, she is introduced to the one person who may be able to help her, Isabel Ramirez a major drug lord in Mexico. She and she alone would have the connections needed to find where her father and mother are holding up. This time they would not be easy to locate, since word is that they are hiding in Sierra Madre. Her son is in the hands of her parents and Angie is afraid for him. Her biggest fear is that he will be harmed.
Isabel is anxious to help Angie, and assigns one of her men to assist her. His name is Alejandro Torres and he is a man with secrets. He is an undercover agent who is after Isabel’s father Ramon Mendez, the man responsible for the death of his young nephew, and for the loss of his brother’s hands. His brother now has hooks and his career as a surgeon is over. Ramon has to pay, but in the six months he has worked for Isabel, Angie’s parents have not shown up. Dealing with his own need for revenge and the search to help this woman find her son, Alejandro is finding it hard to comprehend his overpowering attraction to Angie. Even if she feels the same way, he is in no position to do anything about it without jeopardizing his assignment and his life.
This was an amazing story,—drug lords, delusional cult leaders, a mother straight from Hell and an innocent one year old and the people determined to save him. There were twists and turns and surprises and never a dull moment. There is a paranormal twist to the story, but even with that, there is a sobering reality regarding cults, sex slaves and people who will follow a madman. History is filled with such madmen…Hitler who swayed an entire country to sanction mass murder, and other cults where members committed suicide out of fear and misguided belief…plus too many more to mention.
I loved this book and highly recommend it. I read this in one day because I couldn’t put it down and wanted to know what happened. Would Jake be saved? Would Angie and Alejandro find love? What would happen to the cult and her parents? Why was Jake the Chosen One? All questions are answered.
