Veterinarian Piper is pragmatic enough to know her marriage wasn’t working, which is why she left Dylan a year ago and pretends it hasn’t hurt like hell every day since. Then Dylan calls out of the blue and tells her to come right away for an animal emergency. Piper arrives on the ranch that used to be her home to find her horse savagely killed. She can’t fathom what could have done it. One thing, however, is obvious. Piper still loves Dylan.
Dylan isn't over Piper, not by a long shot. After her horse was ripped apart by something he’s pretty sure wasn’t a bear, it feels so good to hold Piper in his arms again. If only they could find a way to undo the mess that drove them apart.
An epic blizzard hits, trapping Piper and Dylan on the ranch for what just might be their one chance at reuniting. But as things get a whole lot scarier, it’s clear something evil has brought them together.
Hunted by the supernatural, they must fight for their lives, but can they also fight for their love?

Although I have called this book horror it is a love story as well. The author has done an amazing job of incorporating both genres in a page turning edge of your seat story.
Piper Mitchell is a veterinarian and owns her own practice, her life should have been perfect but it wasn’t since her divorce from her husband Dylan Kincaid almost a year ago. The two of them haven’t spoken since the divorce so when Dylan calls her to come to the ranch to see her horse who has been torn apart by something she rushes over but is too late. Seeing each other after so long they both realize that they still love each other and Piper realizes that she is mostly to blame.
Her horse Lightning was literally torn apart and it was hard to believe an animal was responsible and before long they will learn the truth of what did it and face the fact that their lives are in danger. When Lightning’s colt becomes sick Dylan calls on Piper again for help even though she is not a large animal vet. With a monster snow storm coming, Piper knows she will be stuck on the ranch but she won’t let the colt die if she can help it.
Things go from bad to worse when an elk is found with his antlers pulled out of his head and his head ripped off. A creature with sharp teeth and claws, antlers and looking like a man appears in addition to animals appearing that are from another time and place. A woman who belonged in the eighteenth century also well aware of the creature has shown up, a creature hungry for human flesh. Dylan’s great grandmother used to tell him stories of a witherling and from what he is seeing he is sure that is what is after them.
Body parts, half eaten humans, prehistoric animals and scariest of all people and animals who appear to be taken over by the withering so everyone could be a danger. While treating those that are injured fighting against those that have changed and trying to come up with a plan of attack against a creature that is immune to bullets Piper and Dylan realize that the year apart was a mistake, a mistake they may not live long enough to rectify.
We discovered the origin of the witherling and it was a shocking surprise. Friends can’t be trusted, family pets can’t be trusted and Piper and Dylan have to fight and kill the witherling with ordinary weapons that are useless. This book was non-stop suspenseful, at times I had to stop reading to catch my breath but there wasn’t a dull moment and I can’t wait to see what else this author is planning.
