Erin has just realized that for the entirety of their life, their family has lied to them. Their Sight has been masked for years, so Erin thought the Pixies and Mermaids were hallucinations. Not only are the supernatural creatures they see daily real, but their grandmother is an Elf, meaning Erin isn’t fully human. On top of that, the dreams Erin thought were nightmares are actually prophecies.
While dealing with the anger they have over all of the lies, they are getting used to their new boyfriend, their boyfriend’s bullying ex, and the fact that they come from a family of Demon Hunters. As Erin struggles through everything weighing on them, they uncover a Demon plot to take over the world.
Erin just wants some time to work through it all on their own terms, but that’s going to have to wait until after they help save the world.

Sara Codair not only gives us a really good fantasy story in Power Surge, but we also get a really good fantasy story with a non-binary main character that is well crafted and completely endearing
Erin is figuring out that the world they live in, the one where everyone thinks they are mentally ill, is not the real world. The real world in this adventure is one where the fairies and creatures Erin sees every day are just as real as the senior year classes they still have to navigate.
My favorite thing about this book was that Erin being non-binary was only one facet of a very complex character. It just was. The conflict was not their identity but rather the interactions with and the growing knowledge of the non-human parts of the world. As a young adult novel, there were some dark scenes, but the overall feeling of hope never leaves.
That is a fine line and Codair walks it well. The reader leaves feeling very satisfied with this story, with just enough loose ends to set up the next book in the series.
