A hapless witch. A broken vampire.

And a mysterious death that brings them under the same roof.

When I learn I’ve inherited a house in Salem, I’m sure it’s a mistake.

Besides, I have zero desire to return to a town where I’m an outcast.

The surprises continue when I meet my tenants, including a broody vampire and a foodie wolf shifter.

But I’m only staying around long enough to sell my long lost aunt’s house.

Even when they convince me to go to a Halloween ball.

Even when I agree to pretend to be the vampire’s girlfriend.

Even when I discover his softer and oh-so-sexier side.

Because a witch without magic in Salem makes as much sense as a pig with wings. And I’ve never seen one fly.

Fans of New Girl and What We Do in the Shadows will love the Salem Supernaturals series - paranormal chick lit romances with a splash of romance, comedy, and mystery!

“It seemed like no time had passed when I awoke with a jolt and sat upright. My heart was racing. Was there something in the room with me?”—Rebel Spells

Lisa Carlisle has written a lot of books. A lot. She’s an USA Today best seller and a former Marine to boot although my husband, himself a Marine, would be quick to tell me once a Marine, always a Marine. That much is evident in Carlisle’s writing which is precise, goal directed and maybe a bit regimented.

The story’s MC is Nova Adams. She is an assistant publisher of children’s books, living in the big city, who suddenly finds herself a landlady when her Aunt Margaret unexpectedly passes away. There’s a touch of unresolved family discord between Nova’s mother and Aunt Margaret as a result but that just lends itself to the mystery to be solved.

And, oh, did I mention supes abound in Carlisle’s books? Nova is a witch. Her best friend and newly inherited tenants are paranormal beings as well—shifters, vampires, witches, and the like. Of interest to Nova, is the resident vampire, Diego; the feeling is mutual. Their attraction is tenuous. However, Nova (against her better judgment) agrees to accompany Diego and friends to a Halloween Ball on the pretense of being his new love interest.

Why would she do that, you might wonder? Well, read “Rebel Spells” to learn more. You’ll also want to find out who’s killing witches in Salem and what it might have to do with Nova, her Aunt Margaret and a sought-after Book of Shadows.

The story is told in alternating point-of-view between Nova and Diego. There are plenty of references to songs within the novel. I found it distracting but for many, it will set the tone while reading. This is a quick read, much like a beach book would be and I was captivated by the book cover. It’s very catchy!

I think I’ll have to check out Carlisle’s back list. She has a few books that look a little more torrid and complex (but gargoyle stories tend to be like that).

A four-star read about a woman who discovers her roots, an annoying vampire and the cause behind the murder of witches in Salem.
