Sometimes…things aren’t always what they seem.

For Trevor, being away from home for the first time was difficult enough. Add being gay and completely inexperienced and the difficulty jumps a notch. Top it off with being disowned by your family and being uncomfortable in new situations, and life seems impossible. Then the attack happened.

For Philip, recovering from a breakup was hard, and a good reason to swear off relationships. Counseling other LGBTQ individuals through their struggles was rewarding, but practicing what you preached was a challenge. Then a threat from years ago came roaring back.

Given Trevor's inexperience and Philip's aversion to relationships, how could these two possible get together?

Trevor Morgan is one of the unfortunate gay men whose parents chose to throw him out. His uncle took him in, but he knew he couldn’t stay with him for long, but it was fortunate his uncle found him a job working on a ranch.

Trevor’s new job is Oklahoma City, a place he never visited and with a boss he never met.
He never left North Carolina until now and the only thing he knew for sure was that he would keep being gay as far in the closet as possible.

When Trevor got off the bus he was met by his new boss, Hugh Winslow, who welcomed him with open arms. He has a small apartment attached to the house and Hugh and his wife insisted he eat all his meals with them. He was treated in a way he was never treated before and found that although he lost one family, he found another.

It didn’t take long before Trevor was comfortable and the love between the Winslow’s and him was cemented. Hugh worried that Trevor didn’t have any friends and insisted he borrow Marlene’s car and go to the city and mingle. He went to a gay restaurant where he laid eyes on a man who he instantly was attracted to so he did what any new gay man would do, he ran.

It would take a few more trips and running until something happened and he found himself at the LGBTQ Center where his dream man, Phillip Walker was his counselor. Phillip like Trevor was also attracted to the man he saw running out of the restaurant and his “no relationships” pledge fell by the wayside.

He met Raul, Phillip’s best friend who promised to introduce him to the gay life and be his friend and Hugh and Marlene do everything in their power to encourage him. They discovered he was gay when an attack brought Hugh to the place where the attack occurred in front of a gay restaurant. Hugh could care less.

This was an emotional story about two young men with father issues, Trevor who was thrown out and Phillip who grew up watching as his father would beat his mother until she packed up her son and ran.

Trevor and Phillip become very close, but Phillip’s past rears its ugly head threatening everything the two want. It is always sad to read about young people being disowned by their parents, the people who should love them unconditionally, and most of them do not find themselves in a situation that Trevor found himself in. When strangers love you and accept you when blood doesn’t it is a hard truth to accept.
