Lara Spenser is being hunted by men she refers to as the Hellhounds. Lara’s uncle died in a car crash which left him dead and her in a wheelchair with a scar down her face. Her uncle was a High Guardian and he had named Lara his successor in the event of his death. Now she finds herself in Ireland trying to translate a scroll that has been in her family for generations. It is the scroll that the Hellhounds want.
Lara knows that she is in danger of being found. Although she has the sense of when danger is near, she needs a bodyguard. The man she hires is Connor O’Shea who is in Ireland researching his family. He is on leave from his job. When he meets Lara, he accepts the position to watch over her. Lara has no use of one of her legs and until a doctor tells her that her bones have healed, it is a wheelchair for her. Conn has no difficulty acting as Lara’s crutch so she can hop and not need her chair.
Conn feels protective of Lara and is attracted to her. Although she feels likewise, she is not ready to give in to her feelings. She was hurt once by a man she thought loved her and yet betrayed her. She also doubts his feelings for her since she considers herself an ugly cripple. The more time Conn spends with her, the more possessive and protective he gets, in spite of the fact that he knows that Lara has not told him her real name or why she is being hunted.
When the Hellhounds locate them in Ireland, they have to run. Lara needs someone to break a code her uncle wrote revealing the names and addresses of the other six Guardians who also are in possession of a scroll. As the Head Guardian now, Lara needs to find them and relay the news of her uncle’s death and her position. Returning to Texas, Conn takes her to his best friend Dev Medina. Unfortunately, his best friend now hates him due to an injury on the job he blames on Conn. He agrees to help because of Lara.
Dev has dream visions which have made him a powerful code breaker. Now he has dreams of a beautiful woman whom he is sure he will meet. Will this woman have something to do with the Guardians? Will he in some way or another be part of Lara’s quest along with Conn? Although Dev shows nothing but hatred for his ex-best friend, he is determined to help Lara.
This book had it all, it was a fast read and I read it in less than one day. Lara and Conn are wonderful characters, as well as Dev who I hope to read more about. The book has love, sex, suspense, prophecies and violence. Although the book does not end in a cliffhanger, there is no doubt there is more to come. There are six more Guardians out there and I can’t wait to read the next story in the series.
