Cameron Michaels is a truck driver, who passes a rest stop by Thunderbird Mountain, where he always looks up at a rock formation, he likes to imagine is a stone dragon. Four times a week he passes by and each time he waves goodbye to his dragon friend. While he sits at a picnic table eating, he finds himself relaying his life story to the dragon he has started calling a friend.
One time at the stop his truck broke down leaving him with time on his hands until help arrived. Falling asleep at the table he is woken by something sniffing around his neck and surprise, surprise it was a bear. As if a bear is not scary enough, suddenly a dragon appears fighting the bear off. Cameron feels himself passing out and his last thought before hitting the ground was that he would not feel it when the creature finished with the bear and came to eat him.
He woke up to discover he was not eaten and was in a bed being cared for by a woman who reveals to him that he did not imagine a dragon because dragons are real. In fact, she is the mother of Roark the High King of dragons. It was Roark who saved him, and he is the one that took him into the center of Thunderbird Mountain, the home of the dragons. As Roark shows him around, he discovers that this is more than he could ever have imagined, shops, restaurants, malls and everything one could ever want or need.
Cameron has a lot to learn about dragons, they reside everywhere and in every capacity. He also learns that Roark has fallen in love with him, and the feeling is mutual. When Roark asks Cameron to be his mate Cameron doesn’t hesitate for long and happily agrees. Everything seems perfect in Cameron’s new life but there is someone lurking in the background ready to put an end to his happily ever after.
This was a sweet story filled with wonderful characters. Cameron is always good for a laugh and is an immediate hit with most of the humans and dragons he meets. There is sex, romance, lies, secrets and surprises.
