My first book by this author and not my last. A psychological thriller about the birth of an innocent child and people who decided to play God and create a child for their own purposes, a child they hoped would be telepathic, but they got more than they bargained for. Lizzy Ballard was one of those children.
When Lizzy’s parents couldn’t conceive a child, they decided on getting fertility treatments and on the recommendation of their friend Dr. Owen McNally they went to Vivantem run by Gerard Bonnay and his wife Louise. Lizzy was born with her parents unaware of what she was and what she was capable of. As she grew older her power grew. When she got mad, her mother would begin to suffer from headaches that left her unable to function, dizzy spells, lack of balance and a sure sign that Lizzy was the one to blame.
With Owen’s help they did everything possible to control Lizzy’s outbursts, telling her when she felt angry to run and hit a pillow, which she did until she didn’t. The time she didn’t resulted in her mother’s death. School proved to be a danger for other children, so she was taught at home, her entire life she was kept apart from other people for fear of what could happen.
An incident on a train when Lizzy was around sixteen would change everyone’s life, her father, Owen and Lizzy. An obnoxious woman caused Lizzy to get angry and the results were horrible.
Owen suggested that they go to Bonnay for his help, never realizing that he was the one responsible for everything.
Bonnay kept an eye on Lizzy for any changes in her behavior hiring a live in housekeeper, Ruby Mano. Ruby accepted the offer of help with her nephew and his gambling debts and subsidized her pay with extra money the Ballard’s couldn’t afford. Ruby was with the family for years and never reported anything negative.
It would take the train incident for Bonnay to realize that Lizzy was a weapon and not telepathic as he hoped. When Owen became aware of what Bonnay’s help was doing to Lizzy all bets were off.
So much happened to Lizzy, Ruby and Owen with the result being that Lizzy could not live a normal life as a sixteen-year-old going on seventeen. Lizzy will always be in danger from those who fear her and want her destroyed and I am anxious to read the rest of her story. Can she get away from Bonnay, can she learn to control herself and not hurt anyone else and will there be more Lizzy’s being born.
