I, Ervyn Morryés of the Black Mountain clan, know all about control.
As the only fair-haired Dark Elf in the Highlands, I had to learn to control my fists and my temper in the face of derision.
To become the best archer amongst my peers, I had to learn to control my breathing and my movements.
But the day the half-breed called Lochan Féyes arrived at the training camp, my discipline faltered. Because—sweet gods—when I am around that aloof, blue-eyed assassin, my need is uncontrollable.

The Mutt is a really good intro to a new world created by Kasia Bacon. I can understand why it was nominated as a Best Short Story in 2017. It is wonderfully descriptive, making it easy to visualize the settings and characters, their movements and emotions.
Ervyn, a Dark Elf, is in training for the military and his eye is caught by Lochan, a half breed offensively called a Mutt, one human parent, one elf. Different from others in the group, he catches Ervyn’s attention with his blue eyes, calm demeanor and deadly skills and he gets annoyed by Lochan’s apparently disinterest.
The story, whilst short, has a good mix of set up, intrigue, heat and character development. I’m very interested to see things from Lochan’s POV in the next book, The Highlander, to see his feelings on everything from personal history, training experience and possible relationship with Ervyn.
This looks to be a good start to a new series and I’m interested to see how things unfold for these two men. Also, a very helpful glossary is included at the start of the book to help with the majority of terms included across the story.
