DEATH DEFIES HER . . .

Vampire hunters Jess Vandermire and John Brittain are supposed to be relaxing in the City of Lights while Jess’s brother, Regent, a Catholic priest, fulfills a three-month assignment. Only their time in Paris so far has been anything but a vacation…

Last month, they managed to put down a demon uprising, but that’s nothing compared to what’s going on now. There’s a serial killer on the loose, the vampires are on the verge of civil war, and behind it all, there’s a secret society pulling the strings. If that isn’t bad enough, Jess’s newfound twin sister is stirring up trouble everywhere she goes.

But Paris is a dark place, alive with shadows of the past. If Jess and Britt don’t find some answers soon, mankind could become enslaved forever….

City of Bones—some secrets don’t stay buried...

While this is listed both as Book Two of the City of Bones, that is a misnomer and does not do the reader any justice. This is also listed as book 6 of the Vampire Hunter series, and it most definitely needs to be read in series order to understand what transpires.

With those disclaimers in place, this installment continues the adventures of Jess Vandemire and the love of her life, John Brittain. This time the duo is in Paris, taking on a serial killer as well as secret society of Vampires. The premise is strong, but it never feels like it has one cohesive storyline. There are a lot of loose ends which hopefully will come to completion in the next book in the series.

There were a couple of character traits that were a bit distracting to me. One is that Jess is still struggling with whether she is good or evil after all of her years in existence and 5 books, the other is that there is a lot of pet-name use that gets distracting.

BUT This book had a great mystery and the action was fun to follow as Jess and Britt faced off with the Vampire Cult. There was very little romance in this particular book in the series. It was definitely more focused on the other parts of the narrative. Overall, a solid addition to the series.
