Tobias and Kyle are adjusting to living in Pennsylvania and Tobias’ new rank as Arkhon only now the National Conference is a few short days away and it being held in California at the anax’s home. Tobias knows the anax wants him dead and is a danger to all werewolves. He is way past the time when he should step down and since he won’t Tobias has to consider challenging him.

Tobias never wanted to lead he only wanted a quiet life with his mate, but fate has other things in store for him and he could possibly become the anax. Unfortunately, before Tobias and Kyle even leave for California two attempts on Tobias’s life happen, one by a very sick wolf who no doubt was recently changed and had no time for his illness to be cured. The next time is by one of the human staff who attacks Tobias with a gun filled with silver bullets. Quick reflexes by Kyle save Tobias but left the human dead.

Tobias and Kyle know that killing a human could mean death to Kyle but with witnesses and presenting their case Kyle is cleared. That would be fine but the anax can override everything, and Kyle could face death if the anax has his way. Arriving in California Kyle is immediately arrested and locked up proving that the anax is not accepting the recommendation of his innocence.

Tensions are high and Tobias needs to find allies other than his friends leaving him no choice but to challenge the anax, a challenge to the death. Tobias realizes with Kyle’s help that he can ignore the anax’s compulsion but what he can’t ignore are challenges from other Alphas before he challenges to anax.

Fights are breaking out between the Canadian packs and the American packs and there is no doubt that the anax wants a war that will hopefully leave him in charge of both countries. The anax is suffering from dementia although his body is still fit which happens after living for centuries.

Zane and Justin, two of Tobias’ closet friends have his back and are ready to do everything they can to help him and the one person he needs the most is locked up in a cell.

Before Tobias can issue a challenge to the anax Tobias is challenged and the challenger is under the anax’s compulsion with the hope of Tobias dying. This book had lots of tension, lots of betrayal, lies and secrets and lots of explicit sex. You will have to find out for yourself what happens in California, and you won’t be sorry.
