This is another visit to Folly and everyone at Marathon Ranch. We catch up with Ash Colter who we met in book one when he inherited the ranch after the death of his father and Lady Dorothy Applewhite, the Dutchess of Langdon Ash’s ex who followed him convinced she could win him back. Unfortunately, for her he has started a relationship with one of his hands, Trisha Owen, and he is blind to everything that concerns Dorothy.
The one person who is totally mesmerized by Dorothy is Charlie Farrow who went from a ranch hand to ranch foreman. Charlie is coming up on his fiftieth birthday and has faced the fact that his life is empty with no one to love and his fascination with the Dutchess is a dead-end. She lives in England; she is royalty and half his age. Knowing all that, he wants her time in Texas to be pleasant and takes over the job of entertaining her.
Dorothy tries everything to get Ash’s attention, and nothing works so she decides to make him jealous, and it is Charlie she has enlisted in her mind to be the lucky man to aide in her ruse. Charlie realizes that she is probably using him to get Ash’s attention, but he is still willing to show her a fun time till she leaves.
Charlie takes Dorothy to clubs, teaches her the two-step, gets her on a horse and even gives in to her excitement about a search for buried Confederate gold according to a map he won at a poker game. With Charlie she is a different person, laughing, making jokes and loving Texas and horses. Charlie is counting the days till she is gone but she begs him to come to England for a visit and he is considering it.
Charlie is such an amazing character, sincere, trustworthy, and a man any woman would want. Dorothy comes off as a snob and a girl who wants what she wants no matter who gets hurt but we watch as Charlie gets her to embrace a different attitude. What happens between Ash and Trisha and Charlie and Dorothy is something I won’t reveal but all questions from book one are answered.
