Remy Walsh is buried in secrets. The big ones he keeps from his friends are his maman, the Cajun beauty Aurore, is housebound and trapped in her own world, and his runaway father left seven years ago without a word to Remy. He hates him.

But Remy has another giant secret. Even though he and his boyfriend Trung are a popular couple at school, Remy is afraid to tell his mother he is gay. The last thing he wants to do is hurt this fragile being he loves so much.

So he retreats into the cocoon that being an actor is, starring in his school’s musical and forgetting for a time each day, during rehearsal, that he has so many problems eating at him.

His home is about to literally come crashing down on him. He well knows, but doesn’t believe, that secrets have a way of coming out.

Will anyone come to his rescue?

This is my first book from this author and it’s a little bit of a mixed bag for me. It felt like a story of two halves, with the second half moving along at quite the pace after the first had dragged a little.

I found myself at odds with the writing style, which felt a little bit teenage angst but in an American teen drama kind of way. Remy, our leading man, is quite the actor and seems to portray this when speaking to himself and others, a prologue of sorts but he’s not alone in it. His boyfriend, Trung, is just as bad.

Family drama comes in two forms. Remy’s Maman has become a hoarder, to a quite dangerous level, and his father left several years ago, with no word from him since. More and more piles onto Remy’s plate but he doesn’t help himself by keeping so many secrets from everyone and, as we all know, secrets have a way of coming out. Remy seems to have a great support network when he’s at school, being the main attraction of the drama club with this production’s lead role, but he has a dual personality of thinking of course they love me Vs why do they love me.

There is a good cast of characters that help to build up this story. The drama geeks all have each other’s backs but overall it seems to be a very accepting school. This is showcased perfectly with the mix of people who show up to save the day for the bulk of the second half.

One of the things that frustrated me was the very quick turn around of feelings when it comes to secrets that are not Remy’s being revealed. I have seen other people’s reviews and this is possibly just a me thing but because it was over the space of minutes, not even hours, after the revelation that everything seems to all be well. Other reviews have given five stars and I can see where they are coming from but, essentially, this one just wasn’t for me but I hope that everyone will give it a chance to see what they think.
