This is a short prequel to an established series. It does not need to be read in order, but it does provide background for the main character, Ember and her romantic interest, Rane. The premise of time travel would be enough to tackle in this series, but Applegate adds some additional intriguing paranormal elements that just make it even more fun! There were moments that seemed a little slowed down by the amount of descriptors, but the overall plotline was interesting enough to keep it going.

Ember is the major strength of the story. She is fun and smart and her interactions with the cast of characters are worth the read. It will be interesting to see how this series progresses and if the pace continues. The last chapters brought a surprise – no spoilers!- that will keep the reader intrigued. Overall a super solid start to a series!
