Years ago, a family tragedy led Murray to abandon a promising music career, focusing instead on trying to improve the lives of those who need it most. These days, Murray is a workaholic living a bleak existence, battling chronic depression and self-medicating with alcohol.

Things start to look up, however, when he runs into a mysterious man he’d hooked up with years before. Vincent is a tall, handsome daddy with a Cheshire Cat smile, and his previous detached manner has been replaced this time around by warmth and affection.

Being a highly emotional man, Murray knows he would be falling hard and fast under normal circumstances. Unfortunately, though, Vincent is already taken. And while he assures Murray that he and his partner Darrin are in an open relationship, Murray can’t help but worry about the ferocity of his attraction to Vincent.

All this changes when Vincent introduces Murray to Darrin. Slender, furry and devilishly cute, Darrin and his mystical hippie ways captivate Murray, as does his open and loving personality.

When all three men hurtle headlong into an intense and passionate affair, Murray can hardly believe the way his life has turned around. Could this be the Happily Ever After he’s always wanted? Or are the lines of reality more blurred than he might ever have imagined?

Colin Dereham has given us his own spin on the notion of haunted hearts. He saves the ghosts for the last part of the story, providing a dramatic turnaround that surprises the main character as much as it does the reader.

The author is also an up-front writer of erotic romance, so be prepared for a lot of on-page sex in this story. Dereham is also a great character writer, and that’s where this book is its richest.

Set in Australia, Three Heart Junction gives us foreigners a great sense of the landscape and climate variations of this huge island nation. Murray is a man in early middle age, a bearded bear whose career is in the care of adults with disabilities. He works hard—too hard, maybe—driven by loneliness and a traumatic loss in his youth. Seeking release and companionship, he finds a kindred soul in Vincent, a big bear of a concert pianist.

The twist is that Vincent also has Darrin, a slim otter of Greek ancestry, and Darrin lives a quiet life in a mountain cabin.

Murray’s journey from sadness to joy seems like it will be pretty straightforward, but the author has other plans. The erotic aspect of the story is front and center, but it is Murray’s gentle, damaged heart that keeps the reader anxious and hopeful right up to the unexpected finale.
