When his former mentor, Lord Huay, lays dying, Remare is summoned back to Japan. While there, Huay exacts a risky promise from his protégé: See to it that his final wishes for his successor are carried out, a task Remare will find more complex than he could have imagined and extends his stay in Japan indefinitely. Huay’s two sons will fight to the death for the chance to rule their empire, even if that means challenging Remare to a competition he can’t possibly win.
Meanwhile, Miranda grows restless waiting for Remare to return. It’s been weeks since he left for his friend's funeral. Learning Huay’s court is rife with dangerous politics and former allies who can’t be trusted, she suspects Remare is being held against his will and requests the help of Lord Valadon to get Remare back. Valadon agrees, but at a cost. A high one as the honor of both houses is now at stake.

Miranda insists that she accompany Remare but he refuses, he tries to explain that the Court in Japan is very different than the ones she went with him to Europe. She has been having nightmares and is convinced that Remare’s life is in danger if he goes but he is determined to honor his old mentor and be there for him in his final days.
Remare was supposed to be gone for a week to ten days but when it turns into weeks with little or no correspondence with him Miranda begs Valadon to intercede and go with her to Japan to see what is going on. Valadon suspects something is wrong when he mind speaks with Remare and his answers are unusual. While getting ready and deciding who will accompany them Miranda visits the archives and begins to read Valadon’s sister Bianca’s journals which will lead to more than she or Valadon could ever have imagined.
With her Elemental abilities Miranda can converse with Bianca’s spirit and convince Valadon that she is not crazy. Bianca and her journals reveal why she is not at rest and that revelation was her and her husband’s death was murder, and it was at the hands of Brandon, her and Valadon’s brother. Brandon is presently a prisoner being held by Guy de Montglat with orders that Brandon not be killed, that order is now recinded when Valadon finally comes to terms with what everyone had tried to warn him about, Brandon is evil.
With one question finally answered regarding the death of his sister Valadon and Miranda and two of their soldiers make their way to Japan. For days they attempt to gain access into the House of Huay and to see Remare but each time they are refused access. Miranda is not one to take no for an answer when the man she loves may be in danger, so she taps into her Elemental powers and elevates herself to the room she is sure her husband is in.
The reunion between her and Remare is a happy one despite his concern that she entered without permission. Miranda is more convinced than ever that something isn’t right with Remare and she immediately recognizes he has been poisoned. After getting the poison out of his system Remare decides not to share the information allowing his enemies to believe he is still not a hundred percent.
When Lord Huay’s final request to Remare is for him to read his will rather than the lawyer there is no doubt that his son’s will not be happy and that puts a target on Remare’s back. Leaving Japan is foremost in Miranda’s mind but honoring his mentor prevents Remare from backing out of his promise to him. The beauty of Japan that Remare shows Miranda is overshadowed by the danger she sees and the nightmares of Remare’s death.
If you have been reading this series and I certainly hope you have been because it is amazing, then you know there are going to be surprises, secrets, betrayals and non-stop action. I can honestly say that after finishing this book if I didn’t know that the last two books were already published, I would be screaming and throwing my kindle at the wall because this had me rushing to start book eight for answers.
