Sarai Reinhart is a witch in hiding. Having inherited rare dual gifts of healing and necromancy from her late Jewitch mother and cruel German father, she needs to be constantly on her guard to avoid those who would use her.

But even a skilled witch cannot run from everyone. After a mental breakdown sees her turn a mouse into a zombie, she is captured by an organization of witch hunters. To her great surprise, salvation arrives in the form of vampires and one vampire in particular: the beautiful and deadly Knight Commander Marcelle. Sarai is brought to the local vampire kingdom's seat of power, a place no witch has seen and survived, and finds herself falling for her rescuer. Can she trust the vampire woman when Sarai's blood holds secrets that could change the occult world forever?

Sarai Reinhart is a witch on the run living in abject poverty and working at a restaurant to earn enough money for rent and food. When her temper got the best of her against a customer, she released one of her powers, the power to kill something and make it a zombie at her beck and call. She did it to a mouse who she instructed to jump into a woman’s drink causing chaos and her job, but it also brought it to the attention of those who have been after her.

Sarai is half Jewish and half German, her mother disappeared, and her father and his coven are monsters. Her father wanted to use her power and when she failed to do what he said she suffered. With help from her half-sister, she escaped but her open use of her power brought the Vasi organization to her door. The organization is determined to destroy witches and vampires they have her in a silver chain around her neck making her magic useless. If she signs a contract to be their slave, she will live but that was something worse than death.

When everything looked hopeless, she was saved by vampires who like witches wanted an end to Vasi. Knight Commander Marcelle brought her back to the palace where she finds herself surrounded by vampires but none of them have caused her harm except one and when Marcelle discovered it, he was put to death. Feeling somewhat safe and becoming Marcelle’s ward brought a degree of safety and comfort. Living in poverty, she is now living in luxury but is still unsure of where she really belongs.

Crown Prince Setanto assures her she is safe, the chain around her neck is removed and she is given freedom to join the other humans at the palace for shopping and eating out. Her life has certainly taken a turn for the better, but her father is still out there searching for her other witches want nothing to do with her as soon as they hear her last name.

Marcelle reveals the truth to Sarai, that Setanto wants to use her as ambassador to the witches in his attempt at a truce. Working together witches and vampires have a much better chance of stopping the Vasi Organization and with Sarai’s introduction to the Ellis Coven his hopes for a truce may be realized.

Of course, when they get to the meeting, he was hoping for, and the Coven leaders learned Sarai’s last name things take a step back. Her father is a necromancer and although Sarai is not a full one her powers of healing and ability to make zombies are scary.

The scary part of Sarai is the discovery that her blood could reverse vampirism and she is a threat. Most vampires have no desire to be cured but her blood has made her a target for vampires and Vasi. I got a kick out of Sarai’s attempt to stay Kosher in honor of her mother who she never met. Her spells are said in Hebrew, she won’t eat pig or fish but decides to indulge in a venison stew when Setanto states he believes it is Kosher.

Secrets, lies, surprises, a major betrayal and F/F sex just added highlights to a story I was already glued to. Bring on book two, I am waiting with bated breath.
