A young man awakens inside a spaceship with no idea who he is and where he came from.
He learns from one of the crew, Eli that the outpost he was on exploded and he was the only one left alive. He also learned his name from a tag near him is Akari Tatsuro.
Akari finds out why the outpost exploded, and he finds out he was an experiment. He is telepathic and uses his gift to read the minds of the people around him but keeps it a secret until a police interceptor nearly captures them. Now in order to save himself and all the others on board his secret is out.
As a telepath he is considered a danger and despite using his gift to save the ship and all on her he is now feared. Eli tries to help him, but the captain decides to make a crown that will keep his abilities muted. His allies are Eli and a woman with a young girl going into hiding.
Now, he has two choices wear the crown or follow Nyssa and Ardra, he chooses to leave.
Of course, nothing goes as expected, betrayal, an attack and once more Akari, Nyssa and Ardra are back on the ship. Akari is sent to another planet where he will be taught self-control of his telepathy. His teacher is Hieronymus also a telepath who now teaches other male telepaths how to keep from being a weapon.
Akari tries to come to terms with what he is and begins to trust Hieronymus who once he has taught him control will return him to the only people, he remembers Eli and the rest of the crew. Over time he learns everything he has to but has no idea what is really going on.
Hieronymus and his wife provide him with food, shelter, and comfort. He wishes everything could stay the same, but change is inevitable. He is unaware of what lies ahead. He is a fifteen-year-old boy who has never had a home or parents and that is all he craves.
He is often told he’ll return to the ship, but now he doubts if he wants that. The captain has shown her hatred for him and so what kind of a life would he hope to expect if he returns but return he will.
There are secrets, lies, betrayals and surprises. The book left me in suspense halfway through with nonstop action. Another story of what man can do to man, and it isn’t pretty.
