In a world where life is disposable, two men fight to escape oppression and find the truth…together.
Ernest just turned thirty. It’s time for retirement, freedom from the tedious drudgery of his job as a data clerk. Time to emerge from his pod and explore parts of the city he’s never seen before—to meet some actual people.
And at the end of the month? Time to die.
Will, on the other hand, has met all kinds of people in his sales career. He runs the counter at the historic coffee shop, and when he talks, he sounds just like an old-time data feed. He’s striking, charismatic, and intriguingly risqué.
According to Will, it’s possible to live much longer than the Deacons have always claimed. Ernest wants to believe the heretical notion, but what if it’s all a big scam? He might be old enough to qualify for the senior discount, but being around Will leaves him feeling painfully naive…plus a few more intense emotions that are entirely new.
Religion, medicine, government—every authority insists thirty is the end of the line, but now the seed of doubt has been planted. Can Ernest summon his inner strength and go against everything he’s been taught? He longs to flee the city with Will—but without the Deacons and their Reclaim machine, death will leave his soul trapped in a decaying body for eternity.

As a follower of Jordan Castillo Price , I had thought I had read “everything” Ms. Price has written. So a few days ago, receiving her Monthly Newsletter she mentions Zero Hour, with the cover and blurb. I was astounded it didn’t sound at all familiar, and I went to Amazon to purchase and send to my kindle.
The following day, again it was not on my kindle and went back to Amazon, hit Buy send to Kindle and again did not see it….Stubbornly went back to Amazon and realized I had not seen the error message that I purchased it in 2018!!!!! and never read it…..
So happy, problem solved and now I have read it…….and need to say if this slipped by you, it’s well worth it.
Ms. Price’s mind does always go into the Science fiction mindset, with her PsyCop and Mnevevermind Collections. This story seems a one off unfortunately that I would love to see more of…..
We meet Ernest, he lives in a dystopian world where you are Born, Educated, Work and are retired (die) at 30. He travels, lives and sleeps in a Pod that is his friend, that feeds him through a shunt and is his life line…..Until it isn’t.
Since he is preparing to die, he decides there are a few things he wishes to see before he no longer exists. One of them is a coffee shop that is from “olden times” and this is the beginning of his coming of age. Meeting Will.
We are learning about the horrible, corrupt, surreal world along with sweet Ernest and the horrible lie this world is feeding their people….Now we take the leap with Ernest and learn about what lie has been being perpetrated and the horrors he and Will and some other side family will have to deal with to leave and be free….
This story isn’t pretty, and there is lots to engage your mind in and keeps you on your toes thought the book……
I could see this having another book #2 or even a trilogy….Great little story I almost missed….Thanks for your Newsletter Ms Price
