Jonathan Kerr (The Black Bullet) once the winner of a Medal of Honor while in the Marines and then a Federal Agent is now a vampire, not a leech, not a hybrid not a human but an unknown. Jon’s sire was Taylon Ramsden who was killed and who left Jon dead. It was Roman a hybrid with the help of Shaul another hybrid who brought him back to life but with one striking problem Taylon is still a part of his soul.
Taylon and his twin Regin are responsible for the leeches and for every possible type of pain and torture. Jon was not the only one that suffered at their vicious hands, Lawan Knight was tortured to a point where she felt totally lost. Her torture was beyond comprehension and if it wasn’t for Taylon finally taking pity on her and taking her to a hospital she would never have survived. Lawan is a hybrid that has been hunting for Regin for the past two years her desire for revenge is overwhelming and the only escape she has is at the bottom of a bottle.
Lawan is living in an old church since the leeches cannot cross consecrated ground and her only companion is her cat Oscar. Humans are now an endangered species, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island and New Jersey have been taken over by the leeches and millions and millions of humans have died. It is Jon and the others who work with the Senary that are doing everything in their power to keep the leeches from spreading any farther, but it is a constant battle.
When Lawan and Jon meet she refuses to trust him or any of the other hybrids. Jon doesn’t give up on Lawan and over time she begins to let her guard down. He knows that she is desperate to kill Regin and has no idea how she would react if she knew that Taylon is living inside him and talks to him. Fighting Taylon’s influence over him is a constant fight. Lawan and Jon both have scars both outside and inside and they are both broken but can they find a way to heal each other?
Regin is out there and is creating a new cell of leeches. He wants Lawan and Jon, Lawan because he believes she belongs to him and Jon because he is determined to free his brother. Everyone is in danger as long as that monster is out there and if Taylon is able to take control of Jon’s mind and soul then the twins would be unstoppable.
This was a very intense book and had some very, very graphic violence. There is edge of the seat suspense and Lawan and Jon are characters you can’t help but root for. I did not read book one in this series but that did not interfer with my enjoyment of this book. I look forward to more and hopefully it will be soon.
