Jessica (Jess) Keller grew up on Brookwell Island in South Carolina but left over ten years ago to become a police office in Key West. She left behind her parents and her high school boyfriend Nash Billings. When she left, she had accused Nash of being a robber and left him to deal with the aftermath. Unfortunately, it was his best friend who was guilty but her accusation and her just leaving without a goodbye left him angry.

Jess is now on her way home after killing a man about to murder a woman he was holding. Although her actions were justified, she can no longer hold a gun without shaking. She takes a leave of absence and sees her career as a police officer in the rearview mirror. Unable to even carry a gun her chosen profession dead in the water. She chose to come home even knowing that she would have to face what she did to Nash but where else would she go. She hopes that the saying “you can never go home again” is just that, a saying without merit.

On her way she stops in Georgia where she witnesses a domestic abuse incident and the cop in her can’t mind its own business and breaks the couple apart. This sets off an event where the wife accuses Jess of attacking her husband and no surprise when the wife screams and tells the police her husband was assaulted by Jess, and she wants to press charges. Jess is locked up till everything is settled and the abused wife wants Jess to pay for hurting her abuser.

Jess calls her friend Gabby who sets in motion her release and has the Gamble and Swann law office defending her. The lawyers make a deal with Jess free service for her agreeing to help the Brookwell police department who is dealing with drugs washed ashore and a boat drifting. Brookwell is a small town and is now stuck with a boatload of drugs and needs all the help they can get protecting them till something is arranged.

Jess is one of the people guarding the warehouse the drugs are being kept in and although she doesn’t want the gun it is mandatory. She walks around the warehouse looking out for any danger and manages to keep her gun holstered. If push comes to shove, she will use the gun if anyone is in danger.

Then there is the issue of Nash who invites her to dinner as a way of showing the town she accepts him and is sorry for what she did. Nash was ready to make her regret her past actions but being with her just brought up how much he had loved her when they were a couple in high school and now his desire to start over again. His problem is if he opens his heart again and she returns to Key West he isn’t sure he will survive another broken heart.

This was a sweet story about returning home, about finding yourself, and about reigniting a past love. What will happen to the two of them and whether she can go home and start a new life is not something I will reveal.
