The Eidola Project, 19th century ghost hunters have been asked to come to La Push on the Washington Coast to stop a demon who has killed dozens of natives. The demon leaves his victims shells after sucking out everything from their bodies. What is even scarier is that it is a shapeshifting demon able to shift into anyone or anything even the person standing next to you.
The team is ready for another visit with the supernatural and they are bringing their own demons with them. Annabelle the second in command is dealing with drug addiction and Nigel is dealing with the possibility that his future will include him turning into a werewolf. In order to be on the safe side, he will be confined during the full moon for everyone’s protection. Sarah and Edgar are psychics and Sarah sees someone dying but doesn’t know who and Edgar suffers a devastating loss the day before leaving on their case.
Professor William James is the leader of the group and has accepted this case at the behest of his college friend the Indian Agent. Nigel does not hide the fact that he is a bigot and is rude to anyone who isn’t white like him but since Edgar is Black, he tries putting his negative feelings aside for the good of the team. Dead bodies are piled high in one of the buildings and the natives have locked themselves in the other building afraid to let anyone in that could be the demon. The team is fighting an invisible force that could be anywhere and be something as small as a bug or the size of a human.
The team finds themselves arguing among themselves, Edgar is angry at Sarah but I won’t reveal why and Nigel is mad at the world especially the natives and Edgar whose being Black bothers him. All of his behavior is a result of his fighting in the Civil War and his feeling that the wrong side won. It is a time when hatred runs amok, hatred of the Indians, the Blacks and the Chinese and beside the demon and what he does to those he kills there are the human monsters who have no problem killing anyone different than them.
If you haven’t read this series, I highly recommend doing so they are suspenseful filled with amazing characters who though damaged in one way or another go up against monsters to save those in danger.
