Othniel “Neil” Ricci’s life is looking up, his uncle has asked him to work at his flower shop with a nice big salary and free room and board. Neil didn’t even have to make the arrangements they were made at night and left for Neil to sell to the customers. He watered the plants in the greenhouse, handled the cash register and gave the customers what they ordered. Even though it was only for the summer he now had the opportunity to save money for whatever he decided to do in the future.
When Louis (Lou) Morenas-Mostro comes into the shop to pick up his cactus Neil jokes about the full moon and werewolves, a joke that Lou does not find amusing. Realizing Neil didn’t mean anything by what he said Lou asks to take him to dinner as an apology and Neil agrees. When a bracelet appears on Neil’s wrist and a woman, Myrna and a huge dog Flanders suddenly appear Neil is about to become involved in a world he thought only existed in books or film.
An attack at the flower shop by wolves leaves Neil helpless until Flanders spews fire and burns some of them and then a huge wolf finishes off the rest. This is the moment that Neil realizes monsters are real and the handsome man with the cactus, Lou turns out to be the large werewolf now standing before him naked. A bracelet passed from Lou to Neil, it is the Reliquary, a magic bracelet full of spirits who will now follow Neil’s commands.
The attack was an attempt to retrieve the bracelet and now Neil’s life is in danger and if the Reliquary falls into the wrong hands, it will mean danger to humans and monsters alike. Neil’s carefree life is now turned upside down. The shop now talks, Flanders keeps bugging Neil to get rid of his clogs insisting that werewolves hate them, and Neil now must reside with Lou for his safety not the worst thing as far as Neil is concerned.
Lou is head of his territory keeping control over humans and monsters. To keep Neil safe from his family Lou claims that Neil is his mate, and he must convince Neil to go along with it. Neil has a hard time believing how many monsters reside in the Town of Somerstown and how many different ones there are, vampires, trolls, Weres, fae and the list goes on.
A revolt by Ribelli monsters is causing havoc they are responsible for a plague affecting Weres only and the cactus he purchased is the means to a cure, a cure that lasts until the Ribelli release another attack.
Neil fortunately has the spirits from his bracelet to protect him and Izba, the actual shop, he likes Neil enough to try everything he can to protect him. Flanders on the other hand is obsessed with Neil’s clogs and overall isn’t a fan of most of his outfits.
Neil is determined to ignore his attraction to Lou, but he weakens before long. The sex between them is very explicit and kinky and Neil can’t get enough. Neil is an amazing character whose mouth is his worst enemy because if his brain thinks it his mouth says it, not a great idea when he is speaking to the head monster and boss.
Of course, surprises, secrets, betrayals and sex are par for the course in a paranormal romance filled with monsters, but Neil is what kept me glued to this book and kept me laughing out loud. Neil is one of those characters that I can’t help loving, he is sweet, caring and he talks and acts before his brain kicks in.
Lou and the other secondary characters I.e., Myrna, Flanders, Izba and the rest of Neil’s new friends also added so much to this story. I need more of this series, and I anticipate loving the next books as much as I did this one.
