Seven years ago, Alan Harding found out who his college friend Bristol Rieger really was, a criminal. When Alan’s brother was sent to jail, confiding in his fried Bristol about his concern for his brother gaining parole he had no way of knowing that the criminal organization Onyx would use their influence and money to get his brother out. As payment Bristol has now revealed his criminal name, Thorn and his wish for Alan to repay him by working as his accountant putting him smack dab in the middle of the drug organization.
At the time this happened Alan’s son Daniel was only eighteen months old, now he is nine and Alan is determined to protect his brother and his son. As a computer tech Alan has redesigned all of Bristol’s computers and tries to live with the fact that he is working for one of the largest distributors of Meth in the Southwest. As shocking as it was to discover who his friend was and the fact that he changed his life by involving him in the drug trade, what Bristol did next was even more of a shock.
Bristol has turned against the organization by going to the DEA. His father is one of the heads of the organization, but he can’t overlook the violence his father and the organization are responsible for, even the death of children. Now Alan is once again dragged into a dangerous situation which could put his son at risk. He has a bodyguard, DEA Special Agent, Hannah Adler a woman whose expertise he questions while finding himself after years of no relationships wanting her in more ways than protection.
Her cover story is that her house had a fire, and she needs a place to stay and as a co-worker (not) of Alan’s he offers her his guest bedroom. Having her in his apartment is playing havoc on his desire for her and Danny hungry for a woman in his life since his mother’s death has taken to Hannah, hugging her, sitting on her lap all of which she finds distracting since she has no idea how to deal with kids. She is also finding herself falling for her client a definite no no.
Alan has now been put in charge of hacking into Onyx’s computers to reveal all the names of the big shots, finally giving the DEA the information they need to take down the entire organization. Unfortunately, it is hard to keep secrets when you are betrayed by the very ones who should be on your side, an old story, money talks.
Hannah and Alan grow closer, and Alan is close to getting the information they need but whether it is successful or not depends on whether they can elude the people after them. Hannah, Alan and Danny are in trouble and have targets on their backs.
There are surprises, secrets, betrayal, lies and non-stop suspense. Unfortunately, this is the last book in the Onyx series but as we all know one drug organization goes down and ten more are ready to take over, so I have no doubt there is another series in the works. If you have not read any of this series I highly recommend starting, although each book is a standalone but why miss out on more suspense, romance and HEA’s.
Thank you for the great review, Linda!
