It was at Victory Shores High School where Lola Getz and Webster Bond first met. Lola was a Mexican foreign exchange student and when she opened her locker Webster fell out landing on her. Both had been victims of bullying by Dick Heade, drop the e and you know just what he is. Unfortunately, her parents died in an airplane accident, and she was returned home to Mexico.
It has been twenty-five years since her return to Mexico, now married and a famous artist Lola had no idea what secrets she was unaware of about both her father and her husband. It has been a year since Rico was killed, after fifteen years of marriage she is alone even though he was far from a good husband. When Lola received a video showing her husband having sex with her personal trainer it was just one more reason to hate him. Then the estate was attacked, her housekeeper Flora missing, the safe open and everything in it gone, security not answering there is no question Lola is in danger.
She was able to get to the panic room but so were her pursuers. With her cat Gato in her sweatshirt pocket, she had one more means of escape, but it would mean running. The only place she could think of going was to her twenty-fifth high school reunion. The reunion would have many people returning so it should give her a chance to be unnoticed. Fate stepped in and she was reunited with the one boy from high school she always remembered, Webster.
Webster never left town after returning from Iraq went to work as a police officer working for Dick Head oops Heade who was the Chief of Police. He knew that something was wrong, and that Lola was in trouble, but she refused to say anything. She never knew what her father really did for a living or her husband who she always believed what they told her but now all their secrets have been revealed and she is in danger because of two men she once loved.
Webster’s mom has Alzheimer’s and he would never consider leaving her. He visits her in the nursing home every day and now he feels responsible for protecting Lola even though he isn’t sure what he is protecting her from. The girl of his dreams since high school is in his home and he hopes this time it will be permanent but first he must protect her from whoever is after her.
This was such an amazing book which I read in one day. They say that ignorance is bliss and in Lola’s case it is true because the secrets her father and husband kept from her could mean her death. Flora was betrayed by a woman she loved like a mother and when her reason for betraying Lola is revealed no one would blame her for seeking revenge. Unfortunately, the person she turned to for help just proved to be another betrayal.
I am still in awe of what was revealed, and all Lola wanted was to paint, she either closed her mind and heart to what was going on around her or her betrayers were just so good at putting on an act that all was right with the world.
I won’t reveal what happens, I won’t reveal whether Lola and Webster have an HEA because there are some things you must find out for yourself and trust me you will be so glad that you picked up this book to get all the answers. If you are familiar with Sharon Buchbinder’s work, then you already know you are in for an exciting read; if you are not familiar then after reading this book you will be a fan.
