I didn’t read the first three books in this series, but have read and enjoyed Ms. Carlisle’s other work. I was able to catch up with what transpired previously, noting this is Janie and Arto’s story. Janie has been through two life changing events, the bombing at the Boston Marathon which left her with shrapnel, a long period of recuperation, scars and a limp. Then she was kidnapped by a demon because she was informed that she had been marked as a human who can breed with a demon and that was what the demon wanted. Fortunately, she survived both events, but they left her forever changed.
Janie’s nights are filled with nightmares, but she is watched over by her best friend Larissa and gargoyle shifter Arto. Janie is unaware of the fact that she is Arto’s mate, something he will not confess to her since she keeps putting their relationship in the friend category. It has been five months since the portal the demon came through was sealed and no demon activity has been reported but Janie still lives in fear.
Determined to learn how to defend herself she goes to Arto for training and then he takes her to the library where books on demons are stored hoping to give her information that may help her if ever a demon captures her again. While reading one of the books Janie makes a costly mistake, she summoned a demon and now all the Stone Sentries are on full alert till the demon is found. Arto blames himself for what happened because he should never have brought Janie to the library and shown her the book. He still blames himself for the time she was kidnapped since he was overpowered and failed her.
While the search for the demon has everyone’s full attention Janie begins to accept the fact that Arto may be more to her than just a friend but her constant pushing him away may have put an end to any hope of there being more. She refuses to stay at the gargoyle tower or have Larissa or Arto stay with her choosing to be independent and not let the demons destroy her life, but that may prove to be a huge mistake.
This was a sweet romance, and the characters were wonderful. Gargoyle shifters guarding humans who are totally unaware of the things hidden in the dark. This is a series well worth your time and money and I state that by only having read one which had me hooked.
