Patrick Collins is three years into a career as a special agent for the Supernatural Operations Agency when the gods come calling to collect a soul debt he owes them. An immortal has gone missing in New York City and bodies are showing up in the wake of demon-led ritual killings that Patrick recognizes all too easily from his nightmares.

Unable to walk away, Patrick finds himself once again facing off against mercenary magic users belonging to the Dominion Sect. Standing his ground alone has never been a winning option in Patrick’s experience, but it’s been years since he’s had a partner he could trust.

Looking for allies in all the wrong places, Patrick discovers the Dominion Sect’s next target is the same werewolf the Fates themselves have thrown into his path. Patrick has been inexplicably attracted to the man from their first meeting, but desire has no place in war. That doesn’t stop Patrick from wanting what he shouldn’t have. Jonothon de Vere is gorgeous, dangerous, and nothing but trouble—to the case, to the fight against every hell, and ultimately, to Patrick’s heart and soul.

In the end, all debts must be paid, and Patrick can only do what he does best—cheat death.

When your life belongs to the Gods, when your soul has been promised as repayment of a debt, when your body wears the scars of battle, you really just want to go on vacation to Maui. But Patrick Collins can’t even make it onto that plane to paradise for his umbrella drinks without being called to deal with yet another crisis. And this one is straight out of his nightmares. Patrick is called on to deal with not only a string of truly gruesome murders, but also the disappearance of an uber-wealthy businessman. When Patrick puts the pieces together he realizes he is also going to have to face his past demons in new and horrible ways. Along with Jonothon de Vere and a whole cast of paranormal friends and grudgingly cooperative foes, Patrick must face down the Dominion Sect and their quest to create a new god.

Hailey Turner had me from the first sentence. World building is definitely a true strength of this author. The reader is immediately drawn into a version of New York City that includes a complete cast of paranormal characters. Turner seamlessly brings in gods from many pantheons, paranormal creatures from werewolves to vampires, as well as witches and mages without missing a beat. I loved that none of the characters were simply either good or evil. Everyone was somewhere on the spectrum in between. The characters were as complex as the issues they were facing. The main characters’ interactions and the development of their relationship were also done with a deft hand. Patrick and Jonothon’s personalities and pasts were evident in their approaches not only to each other, but also in the way they individually dealt with the crisis at hand. This is a non-stop, full tilt, adventure with an intense and –whew, hot – romance. The reader really can’t lose with this new series from Hailey Turner. The author describes it as having an HFN ending, but it is one of the most satisfying HFN’s I’ve read in a really long time. It leaves you feeling like the story has resolution but also leaves you wanting more. I can’t wait for the next one!
