Donal McCoy is a rake, but a secret one, his public appearance impeccable. He’s welcomed at Almack’s, but is also a well-received guest at the most infamous bawdy house in London. As far as Donal’s concerned, what he does in private is his own affair, as long as no one other than his best friend knows of it.

A letter from his father drops a bombshell into Donal’s well-hidden, but orderly, life. Quinton McCoy wants a grandchild to carry on the McCoy name and orders his son to find himself a bride.

The last thing Donal wants is a wife. Marriage will spoil his fun. Reluctantly, he schemes to obey his father while retaining his freedom.

Unfortunately, Love gets in the way.

This rake is in for quite a surprise.

Donal Callum Seamus McCoy is the eldest son of a landed Irish family. He is living in London keeping his womanizing and rogue like behavior a secret, he has a mistress visits a brothel and manages to drink until he needs reminding of what he did the night before. Then a letter from his father demanding that Donal find a wife and give him a grandchild threatens his carefree roughish life but if he wants to avoid his brother Padraig’s punishment of being disinherited, he has to find a wife.

Donal knows that the best place to seek a wife is at the Almack, a club for members only and where he is guaranteed to find a proper woman. He finds three women that he feels could fill the bill and he is ready to begin courting. First woman, beautiful and totally obsessed with fashion, every other word is about her wardrobe and what color she should get, going as far as saving the icing on a piece of cake to bring to the dressmaker. He is surprised when her mother leaves them alone and she jumps on him but time in the bedroom could never make up for time listening to her talk about fashion.

Number two is a giggler with buck teeth that irritates him so much he actually finds a reason to leave early. When he discovers that her father has the same habit of giggling, he knows without a doubt what his future would look like.

Number three Felicity Melton, timid and clumsy but not a giggler, not extremely beautiful but for some reason a woman who holds his attention to where he loses track of time. He knows that she is his choice especially when he can’t seem to stop thinking about her. He is ready to ask for her hand in marriage and also ready to keep his mistress, have his cake and eat it too.

His only worry is his brother Padraig is in London and could cause him trouble. Donal has two brothers who are not as careful as he is about keeping their actions secret. Donal’s father is delighted with his choice of a bride and proud of his son, but as careful as Donal was his actions catch up with him.

A beautiful story about finding love and not an easy feat in 1850 where just kissing is scandalous and where courting is not just a matter of knocking on the door and visiting. Donal has a lot to learn about love and whether he learns it or not is not for me to say. There were moments of fun, sex and sadness.
