At twenty-three, Charlotte Grenville has resigned herself to spinsterhood. With no dowry, she works as a lady’s companion to support her widowed mother and younger siblings who live in the country town of Marlborough in Wiltshire. When family friend Anthony Wallace proposes to her out of the blue, she is perplexed.
Not only does Anthony have the habit of ordering everyone around, convinced it is in their best interests, but he is also devoted to his Anglo-Indian partner and estate manager, Simon Walker.
Lottie is aware this prospective marriage is purely a business arrangement to rescue her and her family from financial hardship. But should she accept? And will her growing attraction to Simon destroy the delicate balance between the trio?

As I read this delightful short novel I kept thinking Georgette Heyer would have enjoyed it and would have wished she could have written it herself. Charlotte is a typical ‘heroine’ in a Regency setting. Her family has fallen on hard times and marriage to an old friend might save them all. But Anthony has already given his heart to Simon. Only his hand is available and freely offered but of course Anthony and Simon have to hide their true relationship.
The emotional tangle that ensues is beautifully and delicately drawn, and the eventual happiness for Charlotte and the two men leads the reader to heave a sigh of relief. Early nineteenth century middle England is depicted in detail; the author has clearly done plenty of research and we are pulled into the customs, speech and morals of the period without difficulty.
For fans of Regency romance this is a superior offering, and anyone who has never thought of a ‘marriage for three’ will be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. There are no paranormal elements though the conclusion does take us into a world that could probably not have existed at the time. Highly recommended.
