A Sucker For Love Mystery

Nothing brings two men—or one man and an ancient god—together like revenge.

Private investigator Sloane sacrificed his career in law enforcement in pursuit of his parents’ murderer. Like them, he is a follower of long-forgotten gods, practicing their magic and offering them his prayers… not that he’s ever gotten a response.

Until now.

Azaethoth the Lesser might be the patron of thieves and tricksters, but he takes care of his followers. He’s come to earth to avenge the killing of one of his favorites, and maybe charm the pants off the cute detective Fate has placed in his path. If he has his way, they’ll do much more than bring a killer to justice. In fact, he’s sure he’s found the man he’ll spend his immortal life with.

Sloane’s resolve is crumbling under Azaethoth’s surprising sweetness, and the tentacles he sometimes glimpses escaping the god’s mortal form set his imagination alight. But their investigation gets stranger and deadlier with every turn. To survive, they’ll need a little faith… and a lot of mystical firepower.

Ok, so firstly, please don’t read this book if you don’t enjoy reading some tentacle action 🙂 Secondly, I found this to be an entertaining and interesting story with a really good supernatural plot set in a world of magic users and gods.

Sloane is used to being alone, only just considering the possibility of dating someone and taking a step back from constantly looking into his parents’ murder nineteen years ago. What he is not prepared for, is Azaethoth the Lesser turning up on his doorstep requesting his help to solve the murder of the person’s body he’s now inhabiting.

Azaethoth truly stands up to his patronage of thieves and tricksters, yet you cannot help but love his charmingly suave personality, even if it does come across as a little pushy on occasion. Maybe determined is more accurate but things progress very quickly between him and Sloane. It’s only across a matter of days but it does feel like a very natural progression for them. I guess there is no real denying a god and Sloane is more than happy with how things go between them. There are a couple of touchy moments where Azaethoth goes a step over the line but generally his heart is in the right place. The times when they get intimate are definitely of the hot and heavy variety with multiple tentacles coming out to play and my new favourite word is now possibly tentacock 🙂

The plot of the story is good with surprising details coming to light with connections from both Sloane and Azaethoth. I found the details about the gods interesting. Humans used to worship Azaethoth the Great and his children but then the Lucian religion came about and the previous gods have been mostly forgotten except for those who call themselves Sage, which is what Sloane’s parents were. It makes for a different element to a mystery story. Something was stolen, someone has been murdered and all of the clues point here….. at least that’s how it all seems in the beginning.

I found everything to be very well written, easily flowing from one scene to the next and not focusing overly on one point. There is a good balance between the plot of the book and the relationship between the two MC’s. There is also a good cast of characters that help to move the story along, providing support, entertainment or somewhere to direct their ire. This is my first read from this author but won’t be my last and I’m looking forward to seeing what is coming next in this series.
