Lukie’s been murdered. And she needs answers.

She’s cut a deal with the Underworld to return to the living lands.

But when Lukie returns as an undead revenant, twenty years have passed. Her former sleepy beach-side town is now a roaring tourist hot-spot. Her memory is full of holes and she doesn’t know which of her old friends to trust.

Worse, a monster hunter is stalking her.

Lukie has to stay one step ahead, or return to the Underworld without knowing who killed her, and why….

Lukie Carpenter was excited about the last night she and her friends would be together. A party was being held at the beach house of Nathel Clearwater’s parents and the last time her high school band would play together. Her girlfriend Karra refused to sing and walked off and the other members of the band were not as excited as Lukie was to be playing again but she wouldn’t give up and overlooked all her friends’ complaints.

Now it is twenty years later, and Lukie is unaware of how much time has passed since the party and that the night of the party was the night she was strangled to death. She has been in the Underworld and made a bargain with one of the ghost lords to return and find her killer. She has six hours to solve a twenty-year old cold case and first must readjust to a new world.

Her friend Terek has seen his dream of owning his own bar become a reality but when he sees Lukie, he has no idea who she is. It was at the bar that she first met Cage a man with powers that enable him to keep new revenants under control which saved Terek’s life. As a revenant she needed to feed off souls and fortunately Cage was able to stop her from devouring Terek

Two girls died at the hands of the Beachside Strangler, who was the other girl. With Cage and a police officer helping Lukie sets off to investigate what happened on the night of the party at the beach house. The officer is Tamlyn, and he is just another crazy surprise in an already crazy night. Besides finding the killer she is desperate to find Karra and her dad but without any luck just as she has had no clue who her killer was, and time is running out.

All these years later and all the twists and turns she comes to realize that she was responsible for all the hurt her past friends had suffered. Her obsession with music left no room for considering how the rest of her friends in the band felt and her constant badgering to make them play when it was not what they wanted. Karra walked away when Lukie refused to go with her and put her music first an act that would play a part in the overall scheme of things.

While her search continues, she is being chased by a monster who wants to kill her all while trying to discover if the monster was her killer and who he is. No doubt the monster is not a living person so how would she be able to destroy him, if it was at all possible to destroy someone who is already dead.

Lukie has no idea what deal she made in the Underworld and what debt she will owe if she finds her killer. Will she be returned to the Underworld or would she be able to stay and find her father. Since realizing the kind of person, she was back in high school and her lack of concern over her friends her wish is to die but once again how do you kill something already dead.

The mystery is solved but so many questions remain unanswered so I will be diving into book two to follow Lukie in what comes next for her. This was a coming-of-age story in addition to the supernatural aspects, but it was a story twenty years too late.
