Two years ago I made a mistake—a big one. Then I added a couple more just for good measure. I screwed up my life, but I survived. Now I have the opportunity for a fresh start. Two years in NZ. Away from the LA gossip, a chance to breathe, to rebuild my life. But I’m taking my new set of rules with me.

I don’t do relationships.

I don’t do commitment.

I don’t do white picket fences.

And I especially don’t do arrogant, holier-than-thou, smoking-hot K9 officers who walk into my ER and rock my world.

Josh:

One thing’s for certain: Dr. Michael Oliver is an arrogant, untrustworthy player, and I barely survived the last one of those. He might be gorgeous, but my daughter takes number-one priority. I won’t risk her being hurt again. I’m a solo dad, a K9 cop, and a son to pain-in-the-arse parents.

I don’t have time for games.

I don’t have time for taking chances. I don’t have time for more complications in my life.

And I sure as hell don’t have time for the infuriating Dr. Michael Oliver, however damn sexy he is.

Dr. Michael Oliver has signed a contract to work in the ER for Auckland Med in New Zealand, six months have passed and he has eighteen months left to go all in an effort to get his career and personal life back on track. It has been two years since his life went way off track, the death of a little girl due to an oversight in her diagnosis sent him reeling and straight into a liquor bottle hurting not only himself but his career as well. Now he hopes to continue his sobriety and put the past where it belongs in the past.

When the gay club he way to was swarming with police due to a drug sweep he could never have expected how life changing the entire experience would be. Shooting resulted in two police officers being hurt and Michael witnessing one of the shooters first hand which would put him in the criminals sights, especially when some of them managed to get away. When he went to the aid of one of the hurt men he met Josh Rawlins a K9 cop who pegged Michael as a player and definitely not someone he would want to get attached to even though he was lusting after him at first sight.

Michael saw Josh as an arrogant SOB and there was no way he would ever even consider being with him even though like Josh he was feeling the lust bug in a big way. Unfortunately even though both men’s first impressions of each other were not very promising and even though both men had had long relationships previously there was no stopping them from going further than they ever expected. The sex was immediate and way, way off the charts and even though they both knew this relationship was going nowhere there was no stopping them.

Josh has an eleven year old daughter whose mother walked out on them when she was born and when the man he loved and who lived with him and Sasha was found to be a cheater Josh swore there would not be room for another man like him, famous last words because there is Michael and they can’t keep their hands off each other. Josh has no idea of the secrets Michael has, his drinking and the fact that his last relationship ended because of him in a way he is sure Josh would never forgive.

In between the relationship between Josh and Michael is the ever present fear of the man Michael witnessed at the club coming after him putting not only him in danger but Josh and Sasha as well. Two men both refusing to put into words what they truly feel and not going after what they both really want in their relationship. I did find the book to be a little slow moving at times which is why it didn’t get five stars but in spite of that it was a beautiful story with wonderful characters.
