Well, I was hooked by the first sentence in the description, “a unicorn walks into a bar”. I heard all the jokes about a pig walked into a bar, a duck walked into a bar but never a unicorn. Happily, the rest of the book also hooked me.
Ruby works in a bar in D.C. and one night on her way home she saw something that totally drew her attention, a unicorn. Following to see where it went, she came upon poachers about to cut off the unicorn’s horn. Unicorns are rare and their horn is extremely valuable and three vampires are in the process of tying him up while a girl holds him captive. The tale of a virgin having powers over a unicorn apparently are true because it was unable to move while the girl held his hand.
With her help and the unicorn kicking one of the men in the head he got free and Ruby went on her merry way. A unicorn, vampires and now laying in front of her car is a naked man who apparently has been injured in an accident. Ruby had a run in with vampires who left her with a scarred neck from all the bites but before they could finish the job a light saved her. Now with this stranger in need of help she couldn’t leave him by himself naked and injured.
She lets this man whose name she doesn’t know sleep on her couch and leaves him alone while she goes to work. At work the same girl from last night comes looking for the horse and threatens Ruby if she doesn’t reveal where he is. Now she needs to know more than just his name she needs to find out what he really is. She realizes he is not safe and runs home to warn him and finds out that his name is March and he is indeed a unicorn.
March killed one of the attackers and now he is no longer pure and can’t return to his unicorn body. He is now human, is still hunted and Ruby is caught in the middle. This was a short story but choke full of excitement, especially the last half. This is just the beginning of March and Ruby’s story and it is definitely a story I can’t wait to continue.
