Printesa Cailean has lived a charmed life except for the fact that she rarely gets to leave the palace grounds. She dreams of being free when she reaches her maturity and pursuing her quest of being a pirate. Her Time of the Joining at the age of ten is when she will have a dream that brings her together with her tovaras, the guardian that will bond with her, a shapeshifter who will only shift into their animal form when it is necessary. Her Tovaras turns out to be a wolfhound named Declan.
Declan is her closest friend and confidant and finally at the age of sixteen she reached her maturity, and a huge celebration was held. Finally, freedom is upon her until VrajitorTanlen who trained her for years in the use of magic, appeared and placed a hex on her. She will sleep, each sleep cycle will increase in time, and it will be forever until a true lover’s kiss. Cailean’s parents were helpless and tried to think of anything that would end this hex. It was decided that a tower would be built, and suitors would have to pass challenges to get to her, and few managed to pass.
Cailean begged her father to add an additional challenge, one where the suitor would have to fight her and win. She was convinced that a kiss would not prove a man would be her true love but only a man that could best her in a sword fight. She practiced all her life, and she was an expert and few if any could beat her, her teachers long ago gave up trying. No one could beat her and half of the ones who passed the challenges were even unwilling to try.
When she awoke the last time, it was ten years later. Her sleeping spells were lasting longer and longer, and she finally decided to escape the tower and pursue her dream of being a pirate before it was too late. With Declan by her side and money in her pocket she managed to obtain a ship and a crew. With a trusted first mate she becomes a very successful pirate, and it doesn’t hurt that she is able to call on her magic for help. She even manages to befriend a kraken00000000 .
Merrick Stoneheart had a tragic beginning; bombings by the Imparat hit his family homestead and killed his parents and one of his sisters. The one sister who survived was picking him up from a friend and in her distorted mind she blamed Merrick for the deaths and left him by himself. He was a kid and when his Time of Joining happened his Tovaras was a huge pelican named Ono. Together One and him struggled to find a place to belong and it finally happened when he came upon the captain of a pirate ship, Red Sea Hag.
Merrick went from a cabin boy to a full-fledged pirate and when the Red Sea Hag died, she left her ship to Merrick. Merrick became a well-known pirate and earned the name Pirate King. He heard about Cailean and was determined to meet her. This is where I end my review because I will not divulge any more.
