Mortimer’s life is set in stone. That is until he takes the reins and rejects his crown and his namesake. Striking out on his own, he discovers a whole new world and a whole new him. But even with all of the newness, falling in love is still his greatest dream.

Then he meets Galen. He never planned on falling for a man who stands for everything he’s not. Now he just has to deal with the significance of his birthright.

I enjoyed this was a sweet short novella. The world building is detailed and well thought out. The contrast between Galen and Mortimer’s worlds is easy to imagine.

I loved how different the two MCs are. Mortimer’s far more capable than he thinks he is, and despite his wanting to escape his fate has the courage to do what he needs to keep the world safe. I liked how Mortimer, despite being a necromancer, is drawn to light and life. The reality of being necromancer royalty and what people in the living world think they are is nicely written. I thought Galen’s reaction to the truth felt authentic.

Perdita is wonderful, although I do wonder if she’s more Galen’s familiar than cat, as I’ve never had one as well behaved and obedient as she is!

Mortimer and Galen not only work well together, but complement each other’s personality and talents too. I loved how they were able to get their HEA. Very clever, and I hope we haven’t seen the last of them
