Palamaran Legends and Heroes: Volume 1 Here is the most unlikely romantic adventure imaginable. Sir Carlton Lucullus Rutherford is a handsome, chivalrous, lawful good, life valuing and noble Paladin sworn to chastity, his Duke, and his own self-righteousness. Tsarina Lydia Jalen Sukurova is an alluringly wicked, amoral, vicious, murdering Anti-Paladin who craves power, dominance and her own selfish interests. By all rights and sensibilities, these two strong, vital, people should want nothing more than to destroy the other. Who would think it possible that these two would fall in helpless, hopeless, love? Opposites attract. Somehow Carl and Lydia draw the anger and vengeance of their own deities, the people they trust the most, and a terrifying ancient purple dragon. How can their romance and incidentally their lives survive and flourish against all odds? And where did these seven foot tall baboons come from? Love truly conquers all against everything in the multiverse.

If you are interested in getting to know the world of fantasy role-playing games, Unexpected Entanglements is an excellent book to introduce you to the ceaseless adventures that RPGs can pull you into. If, like me, you are already familiar with RPGs, this book will be an entertaining side adventure inside the rabbit hole that you have already fallen down. The story serves as a shining example of how creative and left of center the characters and adventures can be in the world of fantasy gaming-based stories. Pirates, paladins, anti-paladins, baboons, dragons, trolls, and so many more interesting characters are packed together in a tale about love, loyalty, betrayal, war, and, well, just about anything that happens in a Shakespearean drama, and a few things that don’t.
Be forewarned that this book is not for the faint of heart. The gruesome events that bring together the main characters, Sir Carlton Lucullus Rutherford, Captain and Knight of the Order of Tichenor, and Lydia Sukorova, Tsarina for the Fleshrippers Order, don’t end with their meeting. I was bouncing between being horrified and being amused at the battles that could be over-the-top violent sometimes and bordering on slapstick comedy at other times. The scenes are vivid, and the characters are interesting twists on stereotypes. I wanted to be annoyed by the emphasis on stereotypical behavior, such as female characters being obsessed with not aging and male characters focusing solely on the beauty of their female companions, but the gender-based stereotypes are used to build humor and diffuse the intensity of the violence in combat. Sandwiched in between all the battles, there is a bit of character development and a few moments of self-reflection for some of the characters.
The story flows like an epic fantasy campaign, but there is an overreaching moral lesson that turns the adventure into a solid tale. This is a fun read if you are looking for a fantasy adventure with lessons in loyalty, some over-the-top action, and a creative cast of characters.
