When Nickolas Valadon, nephew of the High Lord of New York, goes missing amidst other vampire abductions by the Human Order of Light, the task of finding Nick goes to Remare. Known as a ruthless, but sexy investigator, Remare contacts the Elemental, his former lover, Miranda Crescent, to assist in the hunt. As they work together, his desire increases to the point where he will defy the devil himself to have her—despite the punishment that will be meted out, death.

Having been forsaken because of Remare's fealty for High Lord Valadon, Miranda distrusts the dashing vampire she once fell for, even though she still yearns for his sensual touch. During their search, Miranda will discover secrets about her Elemental origins and ancestry that may threaten her status at House Valadon.

However, burning desire is not easily denied and feelings long buried intensify to searing heights. In a world turned chaotic by the HOL, Miranda and Remare will risk the vengeance of the High Lord to be together and discover a world of passion neither has ever known before. But passion comes with a price and secrets, no matter how well-guarded, never stay hidden for long.

Valadon’s nephew Nickolas has gone missing and unfortunately, he is just one of many vampires and humans who went missing or turned up dead. Once again Remare called on Miranda for help since she is very familiar with Nick and the places he would have gone. Miranda is very fond of Nick and was able to discover where he was, and he was unharmed.

Nick was in a house with a time lock unable to get out and when Remare and Miranda arrived and shut the door they all wound up locked in. Nick was sent to the house with the belief he was meeting his werewolf girlfriend, Cerise. Locked up with no way out, Remare and Miranda give into their passion for each other while Nick found a room and slept.

While waiting for the lock to open they were attacked by a creature, once a human but no longer. This man was proof that the legends of humans surviving underground since the war are no longer legends. Miranda tapped into her elemental powers and was able to kill the creature and save Nick and Remare who were both injured. Arriving back at ValCorp Nick required treatment while Valadon and Remare investigated the reason Nick was at that address and if it was a setup with the hopes that the creature would end Nick’s life.

The hardest thing for Nick to accept was the realization that the werewolf he loved set him up to die. Cerise is the niece of the King of Weres of the Red Claw clan and when her uncle discovered she had failed she had to pay a deadly price. Miranda and Remare are having difficulty keeping their love from Valadon, despite knowing that Valadon would not be merciful should he discover he was sleeping with the woman he wanted for himself.

The Order of Light (HOL) is upping its attacks towards vampires and Miranda has come on their radar putting her life in danger once again. Miranda and Remare continue to tempt fate when their desire for each other overrides their fear of being discovered. Secrets are revealed that just adds more tension in an already tense situation but it will get worse before it gets better, if it can get better.

Just when I think things can’t get any worse for Valadon, Remare and Miranda, Ms. Marik increases the danger volume. There are surprises, secrets, romance, sex, betrayal and edge of your seat suspense. Miranda learns more about who and what she is and that was a mind-blowing moment. As her powers increase and she learns how to use them she becomes someone to fear and someone that enemies could use if they get hold of her. Wow after each book I read I feel drained trying to come to terms with all the unexpected secrets that are revealed. This series must be read in order since each book ends in a cliffhanger, but no fear since all the books have already been published at the time, I write this review.
