Violet Malone is a beautiful girl who has decided to take up her grandfather’s offer of continuing her education in New York until her mother reminded her of what her grandfather had done to her brother. After her talk with her mother, she realized what a mistake she would make going to New York and what a monster her grandfather was and immediately wrote him turning his offer down and asking that he no longer contact her.

Her grandfather, Edward Wallace had plans for Violet which include her marrying Walter Smithson a man known for his cruelty especially toward women. Walter is in debt and the promise of one day having Edward’s money is the only thing keeping him alive and he will do anything to bring Violet back to New York even if it means hiring a bounty hunter named Lionel “Beast” Plantier.

Lionel was involved in a fire that took his eye and left his face badly scared, so bad that he wore a mask over half his face. Beast was the name he used because it is the name, he felt described him and Lionel was rarely used. He had no doubt that finding and returning Violet would be an easy job but he hadn’t met Violet yet and he was in for a few surprises.

Thanks to someone working undercover for Lionel he now knows why Violet’s grandfather wants her and he also knows that she will probably not survive long married to Walter Smithson. When he comes face to face with Violet, he decides that he will not bring her to New York but will marry her instead and his plan to ensure that happens is for them to spend the night together in a hotel room. Of course, given the time period just the illusion of impropriety is all it would take for a woman to be ruined.

Lionel is shocked by Violet when she doesn’t take notice of his scars and refuses to call him Beast. Not only won’t she call him Beast she refuses to allow anyone else to. For the first time since his accident, he isn’t looked at like he was a monster. Lionel and Violet come from two different worlds so even if they marry what chance does that marriage have.

Another wonderful book by one of my favorite authors all I can say is that I haven’t met a Cynthia Woolf book I didn’t love. Wonderful characters, suspense, romance and a visit to the past.
