Hyacinth always assumed dying would simplify her life. But when her new boss, Archangel Michael, sends her on her first official mission—to retrieve a powerful rock from a collector in Germany—things go downhill fast. For one thing, the Dead keep popping up, expecting her to guide them to the Afterlife. For another, her part-demon nephew Geordi's powers are starting to leak out, at age seven. What if Michael finds out about him? Worse, what if Satan does?

Then there's her love life-after-death. Rooming with a dead French cop no one else can see is complicated enough. But when Jason, Geordi's lying Dioguardi Demon cousin, resurrects himself—so to speak—all Hell breaks loose. Literally. Can Hyacinth get Michael's rock back before Satan steals its powers and breaks free of his prison? Or will her single-minded pursuit put those she loves—and the rest of the world—in the path of Satan's fury?

This is the second book in this series and this is a series that must be read in order so if you haven’t read Debriefing the Dead, Book one then I would start there. This review could give spoilers away that could ruin book one for you.

Hyacinth Finch, dead and brought back by Saint Michael the Archangel is once again involved in a mission for Michael that will not go as planned. With her seven year old nephew Geordi still dealing with the death of his mother and apparently showing signs of having demon blood like his father’s family she is asked by Michael to once again find a shard from one of his sanctuaries that was destroyed a shard that has to be kept out of the hands of Satan who could use it to harness Michael’s energy and escape Hell. She also now has to sort out souls, ghosts who she has to decide if they go up or down.

Michael assured Hyacinth that this would be a very issue retrieval since the rock is presently in the hands of a hobbyist who would probably be more than willing to give the rock to her if offered a more valuable artifact. Well what does Michael know because the hobbyist is far from normal and she will find out the hard way.

Helping her as always is Eric a ghost that she keeps hidden from Michael, a ghost who she can touch, a ghost she has feelings for and a ghost who is at her side unlike Jason a member of the Dioguardi family who has suddenly left her and Geordi behind. The Dioguardi’s want Geordi since he is the heir to the Capo now that his father is dead. It is Hyacinth’s job to find a safe home for Geordi a job she conveniently ignores. More than anything she wants to be alive again and raise her nephew who she loves unconditionally.

I don’t want to go into too much information in this review so I will just say that it is like book one fun in a strange way as I read just how much trouble Hyacinth can get into. Geordi is a wonderful seven year old and smart beyond his years. The book ends in a cliffhanger and although that is something I totally hate every once in a while a book and the characters are so good I just overlook that, and this is one of those books and series.
