April Carter is a history teacher at the very same high school she graduated from. All her life she dreamed of being married and having children and she is convinced that her dream is about to come true when she is sure that her live in boyfriend Jared is about to propose.Unfortunately she cannot see the real him and only the idea of a large diamond ring and a house with a white picket fence.
Her biggest problem is that for the past three months she has had very explicit dreams involving Damian Perkins also a teacher at the school. She is convinced she loves Jared but why is she dreaming about a man who hates her and who she hates.
Damian is April’s Guardian Angel and in three weeks when she reaches her thirtieth birthday she will become a Guardian like him. Something or someone in his past has closed his heart to the possibility of ever falling in love or having someone fall in love with him. Damian’s job is to prepare April for when she crosses over but he has spent his time doing everything he can to get her to hate him and has been totally ignoring what his real purpose is.
A shooting at school leaves April dead and puts her into Slumber where she will lay till her thirtieth birthday comes. Damian fights with himself not to care about her but she has found a way into his heart and he is determined to close it again. Waking up in the Angelic Realm and finding out that she is now going to be a Guardian and that Damian will be her trainer leaves her angry and confused. She is determined to go back to Earth and live her life and she has that choice. She can Fall and return but not to her old life since everyone believes her dead.
For weeks she lays in her mother’s home and visits her old school and classroom not ready to return to the Angelic Realm and being an Angel. Realizing that she can’t return to the life she had she makes the decision to return and begin her training. Why Damian hates her she can’t figure out nor can she figure out why she is suddenly beginning to have feelings for him.
April and Damian are forced to work together and most of their time together is spent arguing. He has something from his past that he has not spoken to anyone about in hundreds of years and he is not about to change that by talking to April. It is only after she is dead that April discovered that Jared had been cheating on her but it was something she should have seen. When his best friend tried to rape her at knife point instead of getting comfort from the man she thought she loved she got blamed. Now inspite of the rules she is determined to return to haunt him and drive him crazy.
This was a wonderful story, a Guardian who refuses to allow himself to love, or allow anyone to love him and a woman who always dreamed of marriage and children and closed her eyes to the man she wanted to marry. I highly recommend this book. This is the second book I have read by this author and loved them both.
