2022 RCA Author Interview with Linda Thomas-Sundstrom

Interview by Sherry Perkins

Linda Thomas-Sundstrom is nominated in several categories this year including Y/A & N/A, and Vampire & Shifters Romance (a favorite category with our readers). Her inspiration is a lot of what-if situations, especially as applied to the familiar: college campuses, and even the Knights of the Roundtable, who maybe a little less familiar than you’d thought!

1. What was the inspiration for your Paranormal Romance Guild 2022 Reviewer’s Choice Award nominated books, The Legacy, in the Y/A & N/A category, Blood Knight Chronicles in the ROMANCE/PARANORMAL/FANTASY/VAMPIRES & SHIFTERS SERIES, and Immortal Redeemed in the ROMANCE/PARANORMAL/FANTASY/VAMPIRES & SHIFTERS category?

Inspiration for the book – THE LEGACY:

My third series is about werewolves and falls under the heading of WOLF MOONS. I have a favorite wolf pack, housed in Miami, and love to write their stories. This time, however, the Fae become involved when the main character, who believes herself to be human, is much more than she seems… and the sexy alpha who saves her life gets the surprise of his life as his pack fights the vampires who nearly killed her.

Note: After teaching at a university for 30+ years, I decided to bring paranormal romance onto a college campus and see how that shakes out…

Inspiration for the book — IMMORTAL REDEEMED:

I read a poem by William Blake that went like this:

The Knight’s bones are dust,

And his good sword rust,

His soul is with the saints, I trust.

After studying tales of Arthur and the Round Table at college, I had a “what if” moment that went like this:

What if those Round Table famous knights were unearthly beautiful and undefeated in battle 9think Lancelot and Galahad) because they WERE unearthly? What if their quest with the Holy Grail continued through time, and we could find seven of them NOW, in our century?

So, I took those seven knights and began telling their stories, one at a time in the BLOOD KNIGHT CHRONICLES series. For example, in Golden Vampire you can find Lancelot. In this current nominated book, Immortal Redeemed, you’ll find Galahad. * And the women who find them.

2. What bit of advice you would give to new writers?

Find your niche – the thing you absolutely love to write about and that inspires you and go for it. Hang in there. Do what you love.

3. Why do you think your book should win — in other words, what makes it unique?

IMMORTAL REDEEMED and the BLOOD KNIGHT CHRONICLES series are journeys into a deep, fast-paced, and suspenseful world that is the one we live and breathe in right now with a few interesting tweaks. Who hasn’t heard of The Round Table? And who wouldn’t love to meet one of those sexy immortals… even if they do have fangs?

BLOOD KNIGHT CHRONICLES is also nominated for best romance/ paranormal/ fantasy/ vampires and shifters – series. Titles in this series so far are: Golden Vampire, Immortal Obsession, Guardian of the Night, Immortal Redeemed, Angel Unleashed, with two more books to come.

She ran without assistance or support, not looking at the moon. Her legs were strong enough to carry her over grass and concrete, and those things kicked up familiar, comforting smells in a world that had first spun her around and then dumped her on her ass.

She didn’t feel like a werewolf, despite the sickness inside her. Her legs were her legs. Her chest heaved with a need for oxygen like any human’s lungs did while sprinting. Still, if being a werewolf meant she’d stop being afraid of every damn shadow, maybe that was a good thing.

“I’m still Kaitlin!” she shouted to the moon that was supposedly going to help change her.

What she wasn’t, she quickly found out, was fast enough to outdistance a vampire.

Her scent was of aged wine, tinged with fresh hemoglobin…

Kellan unzipped his jacket, freeing his arms, needing the extra space to allow even more power to rise to the surface. In much the same way that werewolves transitioned from their humanlike forms to their more animalistic sides, his muscles rippled and stretched as if searching for some mystical connection to the moon hidden behind the clouds.

But this wasn’t about the moon. It was about honor, retribution, the concept of forever and a Blood Knight’s curse. It was about saving a woman he already cared for too much to lose in such a manner. He would risk anything to get her back.

Linda Thomas-Sundstrom is a best-selling author of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and fantasy books. With 45 books and novellas about werewolves, vampires, immortals, and the fae, she has written books for Kensington Publishing, Amazon Montlake, HarperCollins/Harlequin Nocturne, and GothicScapes, and swears she has “paranormal” in her genes.
