In my world, having fire magic is pretty much a death sentence, so let’s just keep that last part a secret.

Once, my life was perfect. Then my past caught up with me. Now I’m stuck in a city I despise, trying to outwit the shadowy forces hunting me, and fixing my ruined relationship with Gabriel Vanguard. While he might hate me, we are far from finished.

In fact, we’re just getting started.

But when I discover my family’s terrible secret, my love life is the least of my problems, as I stay one step ahead of the enemies who framed me for murder.

Can I reconcile with Gabriel, uncover my family's secrets and figure out who wants me dead, all in the same week?

I guess we'll find out.

Andy McHale is a smart, sassy, shapeshifting PI who has a score to settle with the nefarious Shelton Family. The twist? They are also her own family, and they tried to kill her years ago. In Devil’s Deceit, Andy shapeshifts into a young lawyer to work in her family’s legal firm without arousing their suspicion. She’s also digging for information about her past. It turns out that Andy is a cloned human and she wants to expose the criminal dealings of the famous Shelton law firm. Since her magical mentor and friend, Lincoln, was killed in book one, her only friend left in the world is Gabriel Vanguard, who also hates the Shelton Family. Too bad the Shelton Family is wise to his feelings and has him on their hit list.

Can Andy, posing as Miranda Smith, Esquire, infiltrate deep enough to save her friend’s life, expose the Shelton’s corruption, and save the world? It doesn’t sound easy, especially since Andy’s an unregistered magic user, Gabriel distrusts her and doesn’t want to talk to her, and her frost queen mother already suspects something is up with the new lawyer.

It turns out that Mrs. Shelton isn’t duped. Realizing she failed to kill Andy as a child, she uses a combination of drugs and science to render her helpless and send her down to the labs beneath the law firm, intending to keep her in a coma or kill her—we can’t be sure since Andy is able to turn the drugs on the nurse and doctor with the last bit of her strength and magic. When she escapes, an unlikely ally presents itself in the form of a regretful Mr. Shelton who allows Andy to take a mysterious photograph with her. What it reveals will shake Gabriel and Andy to their cores. Their mentors, the people they loved and trusted, may have been in league with Mrs. Shelton all along— and they must all be well over a hundred if this photo is real. What’s going on, and how is Miranda at the center of it all?

After Gabriel picks up a shattered Miranda, the two friends finally confess their feelings run deeper and make love, the start of a new phase of their friendship and their determination to take down the Shelton Family (who sound more and more like the evil doctors from the Holocaust the longer we read). But as soon as Miranda helps him hack into a top secret file, the world falls apart. Gabriel is taken by the Darkwings. It’s clear the Shelton’s are gearing up for another Purge. Can Andy stop them in time—alone? Will she have to fight on her own, or can she get back her closest ally and lover before it’s too late?

Devil’s Deceit is intriguing and a definite page-turner! However, the reader is already diving into a jam-packed world of magic, mayhem, and tangled plots that began in book one. Where some books can be read alone with full-enjoyment and understanding, I found myself constantly guessing and wondering if I would understand this book better if I’d read the first one. A wonderful book worth reading, and even better if you read the whole series!
