Most people would call the ability to read minds a gift. Not Iris. She hates knowing what people are thinking all the time.

As if that weren’t bad enough, that so-called gift has led to being a guinea pig for a
prominent doctor's wild, psychological experiments. When she finally escapes his clutches, she lands in the office of one Langdon Fox, a wealthy, influential, and downright handsome vampire who offers to keep her safe.

Except Iris can’t tell if he’s sincere because she can’t read his mind. Which should make her elated, if she weren’t so worried that he has plans of his own. Plans that might not be in her best interest. But one thing she knows for certain is how his “indecipherable” touch ignites a passion in her that she’s never experienced before.

Langdon wants nothing more than to help and protect Iris but his dead heart begins to skip beats whenever he’s near her, creating too many distractions. And now he worries that his uncontrollable desire for her will sabotage his efforts in keeping her alive.

I love vampire paranormal romance and this one was everything I could want. Iris has escaped from her maniacal foster father a man she had grown to love and a man who betrayed her in the worst possible way. When Christoff’s wife got Alzheimer’s, he was determined to save her and when he discovered Iris’s gift that enabled her to read people’s thoughts if she touched them, he saw her as the key to his wife’s cure.

Despite Iris aging out of the foster system as a renowned psychiatrist Christoff was able to claim she was insane and maintained control over her. Until he discovered her gift, he was a loving foster parent and she cared for the family until the night she found herself strapped to a surgical table and Christoff with scalpel in hand ready to operate on her brain. A distraction gave her the ability to escape, and she ran, nights sleeping in gas station bathrooms, the only food was what she was able to take from a buffet at the charity benefit being in the building she found to hide in.

Iris found an unlocked door and hid under the desk until she heard someone enter. Starving, she made the mistake of eating some of the food she had stolen. Her hiding place was discovered when she dropped an olive that landed at the foot of the man standing in front of the desk. Langdon Fox was the one holding the charity event and finding a woman hiding under his desk was a surprise. Newly accepted as patronage with the Ouroboros Society and not having a picked a Chosen he had no doubt that the woman in hiding needed help.

When Iris shook hands with Langdon, she could not read his thoughts and it was the first time it had ever happened. Never having met a vampire before, she suspected that was the reason. When he offered Iris help, and she revealed her story, he knew she was in danger because he knew that Christoff was a danger to her and others since he knew him.

Iris had no idea that accepting Langdon’s help would change her life forever in ways she could never have imagined. Witnessing Langdon’s affection for his son Damien she had no doubt he was a caring man. Damien witnessed his mother’s death when he was three and finding him Langdon took him home and raised him like a son.

While travelling from England to Italy while Langdon does business Iris begins to enjoy her life and feels safe for the first time in a long time. When her father died her mother lost everything and turned to alcohol and drugs and her attempt to make money by gambling took the last of what they had. Her mom died when she was ten and she went into foster care. At the age of fifteen she went to live with the Christoff’s where she began feeling safe until that safety led to a life-or-death situation.

Iris begins to have feelings for Langdon but worries about how long he is willing to protect her while he wants her but questions if she would want him.

I loved this book, it had everything I wanted in a vampire romance, danger, romance, surprises and secrets. Can’t recommend this book highly enough.
