Upperclassman Conall is rich, impeccably dressed, and set for a prestigious career in the Party hierarchy. He doesn’t lack for anything—except, maybe, love.

When he finds Mark, alone, abandoned and hurt, he doesn’t expect one act of kindness to alter the course of his life forever. There is more to Mark than Conall can even dream of. The beautiful, vulnerable boy Conall knows is not human. A dark power lies within Mark. It can make him immortal... but love might be the price.

This story takes place in the twenty-sixth century where freedom and democracy no longer exist. Where America and Russia have been annihilated and where the threat of nuclear war became a reality. In Dublin the Party has the seat of power ruled by Big Brother and where a caste system exists. That caste system resulted in Mark being labeled a Fallen since his mother died giving birth to him and his father disappeared, as an orphan he finds himself a Fallen with little future.

Mark was sharing an apartment with drug dealers and when one of them accuses him of stealing he finds himself beaten and thrown out. Laying in the street he is approached by Conall and Upperclassman living in the Upper Quarter protected from mutants and extraordinarily rich. While trying to get Mark up mutant scarabs begin attacking and fortunately Conall’s guard manages to kill many of them. Safely behind the walls of the Upper Quarter and arriving at Conall’s mansion Mark is safe and spends the night.

When Mark left Conall did not know his name but money buys information and soon Conall finds him. It was love at first sight because neither of them could get the other out of their head. Conall knows that Mark is a Fallen, but it makes no difference to him, all he knows is he wants Mark. When Mark sneaks back into his old apartment to retrieve his belongings one of the drug dealers attacks him. Mark kills his attacker and even though it is self-defense as a Fallen he will not be believed. This accidental murder will have long-lasting and dangerous repercussions for Mark and Conall.

There are other characters who have an impact on the story and Conall and Mark, Kaylin and Diana both with magical powers and both involved in a rebellion against the Party. Unfortunately, the murder Mark committed comes to light and that is just the beginning of the trouble Conall, and Mark will face. Mark will also learn about who and what he is and just more reasons that a relationship between Mark and Conall seems impossible.

I must be honest the first half of the book I found slow moving and at times confusing, so I debated about just putting it down, thankfully I didn’t because the second half was wonderful and now, I look forward to continuing this series.
