Ruthless dragon king Ladon Ormarr must keep his throne at all costs. And now, with war on the horizon, he’ll need a miracle. Luckily, the fates have dropped Skylar Amon right into his lap.

Except he may have met his match.

The feisty Amon sister has no fear—of him or any other dragon shifter—is brash, doesn’t stick to protocols, and regularly offends his warriors and advisers.

Skylar also has no intention of sticking around. She doesn't believe in the whole destined mates thing and believes all dragon kings to be dangerous. But if it means taking out the High King who murdered her parents, she'll put up with Ladon...temporarily.

But the fates have other plans. And when Skylar disappears in the middle of a battle, Ladon will burn down the world to find her.

If you have read the first book in the series then you are familiar with the story of four sisters, phoenixes whose mother just before she died transported each daughter to a safe place, a place where they will hopefully be hidden from the Rotting King of the Red Clan, Pytheios who wants a phoenix whose essence would ensure him immortality.

Kasia Amon’s story was in book one and now she and Brand are mated after being taught all their lives to stay away from dragon kings and their clans. Convinced that Kasia needs help and would never willingly give herself to a dragon king, Skylar Amon manages to gain access to where the Blood King and his blue clan are staying in the hope of finding Kasia and transporting her to somewhere safe.

We met Ladon in book one when he was convinced that Kasia was his to mate but once Skylar reveals herself he now has another chance at mating a phoenix. It takes some doing to convince Skylar that all the decisions that Kasia made were hers and hers alone, she loves Brand and trusts Ladon. Ladon knows he can’t just take Skylar before he proves himself worthy but Pytheios is aware of her existence and it becomes imperative that she and Ladon mate. Mated Skylar is useless to Pytheios.

Working with Pytheios is his wife Rhiamon who is a witch with immense power and she is the one that keeps draining creatures and syphones their essence into Pytheios which is the only reason he is still alive. Mated to Ladon she begins to see a different side of dragons but even though she is beginning to trust him she refuses to give in to those feelings and will be leaving as soon as everything is safe.

Safe is not a word that is easily used when it comes to Pytheios, his spies are everywhere and keeping Skylar’s identity a secret is proving harder than they thought. Skylar’s biggest worry is her other two sisters who are out there and may not know what is coming after them. Meira is living with gargoyles and has a power of her own, Angelika is living with wolf shifters and she has no powers, at least none that have shown yet.

The relationship between Skylar and Ladon does not move along smoothly. Skylar is a very stubborn woman who doesn’t give in easily and she doesn’t take being ordered around well.

The book is filled with romance, is a thrill a minute ride and we finally meet the other two sisters and get a small glimpse of whose story might be next. I love this series but I did find this book a little slow moving at times.
