Elle Connor's life is as grim as she had always feared. Years of demon slaying have left her with nothing to show for her trouble. She's convinced a "normal" life was never meant for her.

Patrick Holt wants nothing more than to be away from the holy wars and has lived quietly for years as an average human. The trouble is that he's anything but average--he's a fallen hybrid angel.

When Tagas the guardian angel pairs them up to investigate the brutal slayings of young women in Los Angeles, Elle wants nothing to do with Patrick. As Elle and Patrick begin to understand each other, irritation is forgotten and fiery passion ignites between them. "No ties" is how they both live, but Elle soon begins to long for much more. As they become sucked deeper into the mysterious killings, Elle fears that, in this battle, Hell will win.

When we first met Elle she was in high school and discovered she was a demon hunter. It is now seven years later and she is still hunting demons and sending them back to hell. When she isn’t hunting demons she is an L.A. preschool teacher. One night she locates a demon in an alley and finds it beating up on man, only this is no ordinary man. This is Patrick Holt, a hybrid angel, half angel and half human.

Patrick decided that he was fighting a never ending war between good and evil and he abandoned his gift of light giver to concentrate on living a normal life and being a musician. His plans for a normal life change when Elle’s guardian, Tagas, comes with new orders for both Patrick and Elle. Something evil has come to the city leaving behind scores of drained and mutilated young women and it would take the two of them to destroy it. There is no doubt the evil is being controlled by Pyro, a demon both Patrick and Elle have had dealings with in the past.

Patrick still refuses to call on his gift, but then he finds out what the evil truly is. In addition, he knows he cannot protect Elle without it. He is tempted to ask God for forgiveness, but his desire for normalcy keeps him from doing what he knows he should. How long can he hold out?

In spite of the strong attraction between Elle and Patrick, he knows that she is going to continue her life as a demon hunter and he will continue pursuing his music career and living a normal life. What hope is there for them?

Although a short story, I was very satisfied and just can’t wait for more.
