This the fourth book in the series but the first one I have read. Although I did not read the first three at no time did, I feel lost. This is definitely a series that any lover of magic and paranormal creatures would love. Hobgoblins, elves, nymphs, satyrs, and the list goes on but the main characters are wizards and Detective Kat Morales and her partner Tevis who is an elf.

Kat and Tevis are detectives for the Corpus Christi P.D. in addition to them being members of an elite unit dealing with crimes involving magic. The unit consists of Kat, Tevis, the leader Arvandus a wizard and other supernaturals. Kat and Tevis are called to investigate a bank, robbery committed by three nymphs and their partners in crime satyrs. Robbing the bank was a piece of cake since nymphs and satyrs have a very strong effect on humans which was the reason that the president of the bank himself assisted in the robbery.

Since portals reopened four years ago all manner of creatures once believed to be folklore or myths have appeared and solving crimes of magic takes magical beings. It doesn’t take long for Kat and Tevis to discover where they can find the nymphs responsible but once they enter the woodlands to find them, they realize that the woodlands contain magic, are portals and contain a sleeping wyvern. Wyverns are likened to dragons only unlike dragons their favorite food is meat and humans not only meet their needs they are a preferred meal.

The woods are currently in the hands of a developer determined to build condos which would release the magic that would affect humans. A wizard, Malthius, is ready, willing and able to take the woods for his own and control the magic that the nymphs have been able to keep under control. Arvandus has a history with Malthius and learned the hard way how much power he has and how dark his magic is. He will kill as many people as necessary to feed his needs and Arvandus will have to call upon everything he knows to fight him.

This truly is a dream for those who love magic, and there is a lot of magic. I found the book to be slow moving at times but then I have to admit to not being a magic lover. Kat and Tevis were wonderful and I loved how they worked together and how hard they fight to keep from revealing their love for each other. An immortal and a human is not a great combination Kat knows that she will age and Tevis knows that revealing his love would eventually hurt Kat since she knows only too well that he won’t.
