This is a sweet fantasy romance that will capture your adolescent longings, but with a dash of adults-only steam. If you’ve ever wished a handsome mer-man would visit your tropical vacation, you’ll be able to relate to Mireilla, a brainy, rather plain “ugly duckling” amongst her gorgeous sisters.

Mireilla is a young woman who is determined to make a name for herself in historical research. She’s seeking a treasure trove on a small island, but instead she finds something much more mysterious.

Stunningly handsome Nathaniel is human on land and Triton in water, not just any mer-man, but the exiled king of his Atlantean race. He despises humans who pollute the oceans. He’ll be happy when he find the key to an ancestral staff of power that will let him abandon the human world, reclaim his rightful throne and get revenge for his parents’ murder.

When Nathaniel catches a glimpse of Mireilla, holding the lost book that will lead to his family treasure, he thinks he’ll have to seduce her to get his heirloom. It stuns him when he is immensely attracted to the young woman who doesn’t seem to want anything to do with him.

The two eventually overcome their reluctance and have an explosive encounter that concludes with Nathaniel abandoning his quest for the kingdom, giving up on avenging his parents, and being content to make a new human life with his true love. For good measure- Mireilla’s sisters are absolutely green with envy about her sexy new husband!

While I love the premise of this sweet book, it lacks depth and the writing doesn’t flow smoothly. The scenes feel disjointed and jarring, with significant leaps in the plot without sufficient development. For example, Nathaniel has spent years searching for a way to avenge his parents. He hates humans. He has never, ever found a human female attractive and wants nothing to do with one. Yet a few glimpses of Mireilla have him consumed with lust and pursuing her until they have a passionate tryst. Only a few days with her leaves Nathaniel willing to live as a human. Maybe that’s not shocking when you consider the power of love, but Drymon doesn’t give us the big build up we’re longing for, such as helping us understand why Nathaniel is suddenly willing to abandon his life’s mission. Where is the internal struggle about leaving his parents’ murderers in power over his entire race of people, simply so he can have the girl of his unwanted dreams? The tension and conflicts feel shallow and resolved without significant character development.

Is this an enjoyable read? Absolutely! It’s not overly compelling, but you’ll find yourself eagerly reading to the end, much in the same way your hand will go back to the box of bon bons for “just one more.” The King Triton would make a delicious beach read, a relaxing, pleasant escape that will sweep you out to sea!
