A wanderer, a homebody and one opinionated Bed and Breakfast. Not your average triad.

Lucky Denver has wandering feet, sticky fingers and an unreliable moral compass—he’s never had a home and he’s not so sure he cares about what he’s missing.

Arnold Kreed who runs a small-town B&B knows what a home should be. So does his home, The Oaks—aka Mildred—and she has some very definite opinions on who should stay and who should go.

Mildred wants Lucky to stay—and while Kreed is surprised, he can’t really blame the old girl. He’s getting sort of attached himself. Lucky might be fine with the house’s eccentricities, but he’s not so sure Kreed will be fine with the man attached to Lucky’s real name. When Kreed falls ill, Lucky needs to make a decision—wander away like he’s always done or stay and be his better self. Kreed’s hoping he’ll stay—and so is The Oaks, and Mildred has a way of getting what she wants.

Welcome to Griffon's Elbow. Don't let the house scare you away!

Lucky Denver has been running for the past fifteen years and once again he is standing on the side of a road hitchhiking. When a car was coming at him his instinct was to get the hell out of the way and that led to him tripping on a rock and falling into a ditch. The fall and the help by a woman would be a life changing event.

Madeline decided to give Lucky a lift and set him up in the back seat of her car laying on her dog’s hairy blanket. Lying next to him was a very expensive pocketbook and although he was thankful for her help beggars can’t be choosers and he needed her pocketbook more than she did. Lucky never took from those who looked like they were just making ends meet but those who flaunted money were his prey.

Madeline dropped him in front of a B & B insisting she introduce him to the owner Arnold Kreed. His plan of running as soon as she left is no longer viable, but he would meet the owner and then he would go but once again luck was not on his side because as he was opening the front door, he was stuck with a decision stay or walk in a downpour. He might not be lucky, but he was not dumb, and he couldn’t afford to walk in the rain at night.

Kreed offered Lucky a room which he paid for with money he had hidden on him. Kreed saw the pocketbook in Lucky’s room but said nothing about it and asked him to meet in the morning to discuss whether he would like to stay and help at the B & B. In the AM Lucky found a key and the stolen bag side by side on the front desk, now he had a decision to make run with his stolen property or stay awhile and accept a legitimate job. Fortunately, he made the right decision and would be helping in the B & B.

Now Lucky has a place to sleep, food and a purpose only he had no idea that Oak B & B aka Mildred was haunted, if Mildred liked you then you are welcome if she didn’t like you there would be noises, things dropping and she wouldn’t hesitate to lock the doors so you couldn’t get in or slam it in your face. Lucky, who has little or no luck in his life, has finally found people who welcome him including Mildred.

Breakfast and lunch are served to all, dinner only guests. Two of the guests Joe, and his husband Michael have come to see Kreed and they were not there for a room or food. Joe and Kreed have known each other since school as friends and lovers and Joe and Kreed get together when they can only this time Joe and Michael were planning a threesome.

Kreed did not welcome Joe with open arms instead he showed him the door. Joe’s last words to Kreed was this is not over, and it wasn’t. Joe did some research about Lucky and his past, a past that was not pretty and that information was sent to every store owner including Kreed. Joe’s plan failed because Kreed didn’t care and even Madeline who knew that Lucky stole her purse defended him as far as she was concerned the Lucky, she picked up was a vagabond the Lucky she knows now is a different person.

The information Joe dug up has put Lucky on the front pages and Kreed and the B & B are in the spotlight because of Lucky. When Kreed gets very sick and is hospitalized Joe comes calling, Kreed is too sick to argue, and Joe sees this as his way back. Lucky runs breakfast and lunch on his own refusing to allow Kreed to lose money that he badly needs.

Kreed finally throws Joe out but that was just the beginning of the downfall Lucky and Kreed would face. Lucky has found a place that feels like home, people who only care about the Lucky they just met not the one that the media is jumping all over.

Such a wonderful story of overcoming the past and finding a home. The primary and secondary characters were amazing and even someone like Madeline showed who she really is when the chips are down. Lucky and Kreed’s story continues in the second book of this series, and I can’t wait.
